GOING SIDEWAYS: Update From Central Iowa 03.16.20

This weekend was a bit eventful here in Central Iowa when it comes to COVID-19. As you know, I went to the local store in my small town 30 minutes from Des Moines Friday morning and folks had cleaned the place out. Well, Fox News reported Friday that the national guard deployed 1,000 troops to Six States here in America and Iowa was one of them. Well, the local news became quite active after that.

Sunday morning I noticed the list of churches scrolling on the bottom of the screen that were closed. I thought, yeah probably a good idea given the amount of interstate travel down Highway 80 that goes right through the heart of the state. That was the sign of things to come.

My husband went shopping for a few groceries Saturday morning and reports people are now cleaning out food especially things like cereal and canned food.

Sunday evening the local news was popping out story after story.

-Des Moines Mayor issues a State Of Emergency.
-The St. Patrick's Day parade has been cancelled.
-Schools across the state will be closed starting today (Monday) for 4 weeks.
-Des Moines Public Library will be closed along with the YMCA.
-The Polk County Community and Congregate Meal site will be closed but drive thru locations will be open.
-The Iowa House/Senate have suspended legislative session for at least 30 days.

There is no indication that the larger stores have issues with being resupplied by their distribution centers. We have on demand inventory here in America so stocking rooms are small and shipments come often rather than just once a week all managed by computer systems. People are behaving well. No fights or anything like that reported. Just everyone getting ready to hunker down.

For those of you not familiar with the United States or have never heard of Iowa, we are located towards the center of the country towards the north. This region is called the northern mid-west region.

Iowa is mostly farms with a few cities and lots of towns but mostly it's large farms growing a ton of corn and some soybeans. Pig farms are also big here. We produce and process a ton of pork. Des Moines is the state's capital and is where the majority of the populace and major businesses are headquartered. There is a lot of traffic in and out by road and by air. It is a major hub for cross country trucking and travel. I am thankfully in a small town surrounded by farms about 30 minutes away. Kinda wish I was further but my husband works in West Des Moines. Please pray he can work from home and soon.

I would like everyone to post updates for your area so we can keep one another informed. I trust your eyes and ears more than the national news.

And in closing I say you should trust your own knowledge and experience. Think for yourself and question everything.
