Exploring Career Choices: Letting Talent Shine

It is a common fact that as we grow up, we always expect your parents to advise us on the right career to choose and other aspects of life. Because it is the responsibility of the parent to be there for the children, raise them and guide them. Sometimes, parents care for us more than we do, they have been before us, they have lot of experience which they know what best to do and how to do it. and so, it may be important to have it made understood that yes, parents maybe right, or maybe wrong, but the decision to take up a certain career path is best decided on by us.

For instance consider a child who for all the years has exhibited skills in drawing and painting, he has been drawing on the ground, book everywhere in the house and feel so passionate about it. Nevertheless his parents may want their child to be a doctor or a lawyer to quite as they are considered highly paid and respectable jobs. This choice of career is very common here in Africa, every single parent wants their children to study professional courses as they call it, so they overlook the child's talent and focus on reputation and salary. A lot of children here are not happy with what they are studying, they find it difficult to connect and flow with it and thereby not performing well as they should. I have such experience when I wanted to study music in school and my parents were against it because music looks so simple to them, they see it as a career that is not noble. But as much as parents may have good intentions for their children, parents should also understand and encourage their child on talents instead of overshadowing the child with their own dream and ego.

This simple means that if any child fine arts as what they are interested in he or she can develop his or her talents in the area and get a job as an artist or graphic designer. One should always pay attention to their children and their ability and potential rather than forcing his or her dreams upon them.

Lastly, I would love to say that parents should just be there as assistants in guiding their children rightly towards what they have to offer as talents. Knowledgeable parents should pass on the right and helpful advice of joining a certain career one that they love and is reliable to enable them to have a rewarding life. Of course, as the saying goes, everyone’s talents are a gift, and when allowed to grow, will create a career that you will love.
