¿Tiempos de ser tibios? [ESP//ENG] || OPINION

Anoche nos fue muy difícil conciliar el sueño, no es para menos. Los acontecimientos en Venezuela van llegando uno detrás de otro sin apenas entregarnos respiro. Pero no es culpa de la actualidad lo que hace se espante el necesario descanso. No. Es culpa nuestra por querer andar "informados" de todo y el consumo indiscriminado de contenido perturbador. Hay personas que no debieran tener el permiso para manejar redes. Pero eso no sería libertad. No sería democracia. Es parte de lo aprendido acá en HIVE. Es decir, siempre cultivé la libertad como un tesoro, pero saber cuando callar o cuando participar, es un arte que muy pocos llegan a lograr dominar.

Si además sabemos que todos somos diferentes, cuando se trata de pensamientos políticos o de cualquier otra índole, tienes la mezcla perfecta para aprender sobre disfrazar narrativas. Es decir, si eres un manipulador de masas medianamente decente. Y ¿A qué viene todo esto? Una de las cosas por las que me alejé de las redes sociales tradicionales fue la intolerancia y falta de respeto gratuitas. Fue algo imprevisible para quienes concibieron la conexión de los ciudadanos a través de internet. De pronto, la estupidez se hizo global y la ignorancia supina una moneda de todos los días ¿La razón? No se sabe leer entre líneas. También esto es un arte y es mucho más difícil de cultivar.

Last night it was very difficult for us to fall asleep, not surprisingly. The events in Venezuela come one after the other with hardly any respite. But it is not the fault of the current events that are scaring us away from the necessary rest. No. It is our fault for wanting to be “informed” about everything and the indiscriminate consumption of disturbing content. There are people who should not be allowed to manage networks. But that would not be freedom. It would not be democracy. It is part of what I have learned here at HIVE. That is to say, I have always cultivated freedom as a treasure, but knowing when to be silent or when to participate is an art that very few manage to master.

If we also know that we are all different when it comes to political or any other kind of thoughts, you have the perfect mix to learn about disguising narratives. That is, if you are a halfway decent mass manipulator. So what's this all about? One of the things that drove me away from traditional social media was the gratuitous intolerance and disrespect. It was unforeseeable to those who conceived of connecting citizens through the internet. Suddenly, stupidity became global and supreme ignorance became a daily currency. The reason? One does not know how to read between the lines. This too is an art and it is much more difficult to cultivate.

Puede que parezca esté divagando, pero pronto mi estimado lector, podrá juntar los pedazos de texto para entender la idea. Paciencia. HIVE en un principio fue concebida para, entre otras cosas, evitar la censura y favorecer la libertad de pensamiento. Son objetivos supremos que nos atrajeron y ayudaron a formar nuestro amor por la comunidad. Pero aquellas metas no están peleadas con la tolerancia. Es decir, usted puede decir lo que quiera, cuando quiera. Pero también debe estar preparado para sustentar su posición y, más aún, defenderla sin pasar por encima del otro o irrespetarlo. De otro modo, seríamos una red social más, de las cuales nos hemos quejado tanto.

Quizás nos encontremos equivocados, pero si usted es un cultor de la libertad ¿no querría poder decir lo que quiera, cuando quiera, sin más sustento que las palabras y sin descalificar a nadie? Parte de lo que sucede cuando nos expresamos, es la falta de preparación para "vender" nuestras ideas, de un modo que logre calar como un llamado al que hay por prestar atención. Así usted piense diferente. Precisamente, para ello, está la libertad de seguir o no a alguien. Tiene cada quien ese poder acá. Incluso de mutear algún usuario si ese es su deseo. Pero no poder "hablar de política" sólo porque "no es lo que queremos promover" o porque "ya de eso hay bastante afuera" le hace un flaco servicio a nuestra comunidad.

I may seem to be rambling, but soon my dear reader, you will be able to put the pieces of text together to get the idea. Patience. HIVE was originally conceived to, among other things, avoid censorship and promote freedom of thought. These are paramount goals that attracted us and helped shape our love for the community. But those goals are not at odds with tolerance. That is, you can say what you want, when you want. But you must also be prepared to support your position and, moreover, defend it without riding roughshod over or disrespecting the other. Otherwise, we would be just another social network, of which we have complained so much.

Maybe we are wrong, but if you are a freedom worshipper, wouldn't you want to be able to say what you want, when you want, with no more support than words and without disqualifying anyone? Part of what happens when we express ourselves, is the lack of preparation to “sell” our ideas, in a way that manages to get through as a call to be heeded. Even if you think differently. Precisely, for that, there is the freedom to follow or not to follow someone. Everyone has that power here. Even to mute a user if that is your wish. But not being able to “talk politics” just because “it's not what we want to promote” or because “there's enough of that out there” does a disservice to our community.

Ya va "¿Fermi se contradice?" podría usted pensar...No, y explico porqué. Así como deberia existir la libertad de escribir lo que quiera, también tiene que existir la libertad de callar. Y los absolutos siempre serán contraproducentes (también es algo aprendido acá en HIVE). A nadie se le puede condenar por sus pensamientos políticos. Sea usted del bando que sea, un espacio de libertad debe ponderar las causas que llevan a cualquier ser humano a comportarse como desee. Y las realidades de cada quien solo son asunto de ese alguien. La intolerancia jamás debe escalar en nuestro espacio, si lo hace, no somos mejores que nadie.

¿Tiempo de ser tibios? Para algunos sí, para otros no. Y de eso se trata la libertad. Es decir, si eres verdadero cultor de ella. Y ¿Por qué nos dio por escribir esto hoy? Porque los tiempos difíciles que se vienen, requieren de mucha inteligencia y sosiego. Usted haga su parte si es lo que le mueve. Pero hágala bien. Prepárese, lea, cultive la palabra y lo más importante, sepa leer entre líneas y callar cuando sea necesario. O levante la voz sin agredir a nadie. Es lo conducente en estos momentos delicados por los que transita nuestra república. Y es lo que quise compartir hoy, porque es lo que me sale decir. Y eso no es ser tibio.

No, and I'll explain why. Just as there should be freedom to write what you want, there should also be freedom to remain silent. And absolutes will always be counterproductive (also something learned here at HIVE). No one can be condemned for their political thoughts. Whatever side you are on, a space of freedom must ponder the causes that lead any human being to behave as he/she wishes. And the realities of each person are only that person's business. Intolerance must never escalate in our space, otherwise we are no better than anyone else.

Time to be lukewarm? For some yes, for others no. And that's what freedom is all about. That is, if you are a true believer in it. And why did we feel the need to write this today? Because the difficult times ahead require a lot of intelligence and calmness. You do your part if that is what moves you. But do it well. Prepare yourself, read, cultivate your words and most importantly, know how to read between the lines and keep quiet when necessary. Or raise your voice without attacking anyone. It is the right thing to do in these delicate times our republic is going through. And that is what I wanted to share today, because it is what I feel like saying. And that is not being lukewarm.
