Instalarse en una ciudad donde no conoces a nadie nunca es fácil. Es aún más difícil si estás con toda tu familia y estás dejando la comodidad de una comunidad ya preparada para comenzar de nuevo en una comunidad donde eres un extraño en tu carrera o trabajo. Será una tarea desalentadora convertir un lugar desconocido en uno al que puedas llamar hogar. ¿Existen formas sencillas de hacer rápidamente la transición de ser un extraño en una tierra extraña a sentirse como en casa como los lugareños? No conozco ninguna manera de hacer eso.
Habría sido más fácil si uno estuviera solo, puede aprovechar las redes existentes de colegas profesionales en su campo de trabajo o usar las redes sociales para conocer a otras personas con intereses comunes y sumergirse en su medio, explorar y hacer amigos rápidamente. Pero cuando estás en familia tienes muchas cosas que resolver antes de pensar en ti y en tu misión principal en la nueva ciudad.
¿Cómo empiezo en la nueva ciudad?
Llegamos a nuestro nuevo lugar hace 5 días y todavía tenemos mucho embalaje y arreglos por hacer. Tengo que arreglar bien nuestras cosas en el apartamento que pudimos alquilar aquí. El apartamento es exactamente lo que me gusta, tres dormitorios con una amplia sala de estar y un comedor comunicado con la cocina.
El edificio está ubicado en un patio cercado, exactamente mi preferencia por razones de seguridad. No me gusta vivir en un edificio en un patio no cercado porque eso expondría a mis hijos a influencias externas. Me gusta donde puedo enseñar a mis hijos sin que se distraigan con factores externos. Vivimos en Nigeria y sé cómo los factores externos pueden afectar el comportamiento de los niños.
Se ha programado una primera reunión rápida con nuestros líderes misioneros en nuestra nueva estación para la noche para formalizar con los líderes de la iglesia local y escuchar su informe de progreso. Mi primera reunión con la asamblea general será el domingo, cuando la mayoría vendrá a adorar.
Sea como fuere, todavía me siento incómodo con los desafíos de instalarme en la nueva ciudad. El trabajo que tengo entre manos es enorme y debo atenderlo lo más rápido posible para poder pensar en mí mismo. La necesidad de hacer que mi familia se sienta lo más cómoda posible es para mí más importante que cualquier otra cosa. No hay tiempo para pensar en nada más que lo que debo hacer primero para que mi familia se sienta cómoda viviendo en una nueva ciudad.
Lo que quiero hacer
Necesito explorar la ciudad y hacer nuevos amigos rápidamente.
Tendré que conocer lo más rápido que pueda la ciudad a la que he venido a vivir. Eso sólo se puede hacer explorando la ciudad. Tenía previsto hacer un recorrido por la ciudad y visitar cualquier lugar que me llamara la atención. Necesito saber los nombres de los lugares y qué hacen allí. Esto me ayudará a tomar una decisión comercial cuando tenga que iniciar un negocio aquí.
Esta ciudad está un poco más desarrollada que de donde venimos. Aquí hay grandes empresas por todas partes y muchísimos bancos. Estoy viendo un gran desafío: ¿cómo competiré con las grandes empresas cuando decidí iniciar un negocio aquí desde cero?
Hacer nuevos amigos en una nueva ciudad requiere mucho cuidado, no sabes quién es la persona ideal con quien estar cerca. Por lo tanto, no me molestaré en hacer amigos desde el principio en esta nueva ciudad. El tiempo me dará el mejor de los amigos que necesito si alguna vez lo necesito. He sido una persona autónoma y así seguiré siendo. Mi esposa y mis hijos han sido mis mejores amigos y confidentes, y me gustaría que siga siendo así.
Mi prioridad es inscribir a mis hijos en una buena escuela cerca de nuestra casa. Pero no debo hacerlo directamente porque no sé qué escuela es lo suficientemente buena para mi gusto entre las que se encuentran en la zona donde vivimos.
Además, las escuelas están de vacaciones en este momento, lo que significa que tendré que esperar a que se reanuden las clases antes de explorar la mejor escuela para mis hijos. Esto no se hará con ninguna prisa, pero los niños están ansiosos por saber a qué escuela asistirán. He anotado algunos nombres de colegios sugeridos por vecinos que viven cerca del lugar donde vivimos.
¿Puedo iniciar un negocio aquí?
No será fácil iniciar un negocio tan rápido en este lugar. Hay muchas cosas que resolver. Tengo mucho trabajo que hacer tanto para mi misión como para mi negocio. Las responsabilidades de liderazgo no se pueden tomar a la ligera, lo mismo ocurre con las responsabilidades familiares, estoy preparado para las tareas. Para empezar rápidamente, tendré que instalar a mi esposa en un pequeño negocio por el momento y rezar para que tenga éxito. Una nueva ciudad trae consigo nuevos desafíos en los negocios. Encontrar el lugar adecuado para establecer un negocio no sería fácil ya que la ciudad ya está congestionada. De todos modos, haré lo mejor que pueda y espero salir victorioso.

Settling in a city where you know no one is never easy. It is even harder if you are with your entire family and are leaving the comfort of a ready-made community to start afresh in a community where you are a stranger all for your career or job. It will be a daunting task to turn an unfamiliar place into one you can call home. Are there easy ways to make the transition from a stranger in a strange land to feeling at home like the locals quickly? I know not no way to do that.
It would have been easier if one was alone, you can leverage existing networks of fellow professionals in your field of work or use social media to meet others with common interests and throw yourself into their midst, explore and make friends quickly. But when with a family you have a lot of things to sort out before ever thinking about yourself and your main mission in the new city.
How do I begin in the new city?
We arrived in our new place 5 days ago and still have a lot of packing and arrangements to do. I have to arrange our things properly in the apartment we were able to rent here. The apartment is exactly what I like, three bedrooms flat with a spacious sitting room and a dining room linking to the kitchen.
The building is located in a fenced yard exactly my preference for security reasons. I don't like living in a building in a none fenced yard as that would expose my children to outside influence. I like it where I can teach my children without them being distracted by any external factors. We live in Nigeria and I know how external factors can affect children's behavior.
A quick first meeting with our mission leaders in our new station has been scheduled for the evening to formalize with the local church leaders and hear their progress report. My first meeting with the general assembly will be on Sunday when most will come to worship.
Being that as it may, I still feel uneasy about the challenges of settling in the new city. The job at hand is enormous and I must attend to them as quickly as I can so to allow me to think about myself. The need to make my family comfortable as much as I can is paramount to me than anything else. There is no time to think about anything else other than what I should do first to make my family comfortable living in a new city.
What I want to do
I need to explore the city and make new friends quickly
I will have to know the city I have come to live in as much as I can quickly. That can only be done by exploring the city. I planned to take a tour of the city and visit any place that caught my attention. I need to know the names of places and what they do there. This will help me to make a business decision when I shall have to start a business here.
This city is a little more developed than where we are coming from. There are big business outfits everywhere here and so many banks. A big challenge I am seeing, how will I compete with the big business outfits when I decided to start a business here from scratch.
Making new friends in a new city takes extra care, you don't know who is the ideal person to be close to. Hence, I won't bother about making friends early on in this new city. Time will give me the best of friends I need if ever I need one. I have been a self-going person and that's how I will remain. My wife and kids have been my best friends and confidants, and I will like it to remain like that.
Getting my children enrolled in a good school in good proximity to our house is my priority. But I must not do that outrightly as I know not which school is good enough for my liking among the ones that are located in the area where we live in.
Moreover, schools are on holiday at the moment, this means I will have to wait for school resumption before exploring the best school for my kids. This will not be done in a hurry at all, but the children are eager to get to know which school they will be attending . I have written down some names of schools suggested by neighbors living close to the place where we live in.
Can I start a business here?
It will not be an easy thing to start a business that so quick in this place. There are a lot of things to sort out. I have a lot of work to do both for my mission assignment and for my business venture. Leadership responsibilities can not be taken lightly, same with family responsibilities, I am up for the tasks. It's time to make use of my past experiences in business dealings, else things will not go well.
For a quick start, I will have to set up my wife in a small business for the time being and pray she succeed. A new city comes with new challenges in business. Getting the right spot to plant a business wouldn't be easy as the city is already congested. All the same, I will give it my best shot and hopefully I shall come out victorious.
