SMaP141 ~ Free Theme (Red-bellied woodpecker)

The Red-bellied woodpecker I have featured once before for the SMaP contest.
The pictures that I included in my previous post about this beautiful bird were OK, but this time around I couldn't be happier with the way they turned out.

When I took this first picture I swear the bird knew that I would be featuring him in a post for the #featheredfriends community. When the Red-bellied woodpecker stops in, which they do on a daily basis, they are very active at the feeder, which makes it almost impossible to focus in on them. Besides constantly pecking at the suit bar and perpetually circling the feeder, they seem to always be looking over their shoulder for any incoming traffic. If you look closely you will see what I think is a seed garnered from the suet bar, held tightly in its bill. Or could it be its tongue? Do Red-bellied woodpeckers even have a tongue?

The contrast between the bright red head and the black-and-white

pattern of its body is beautiful.

With food being scarce this time of year it seems like I'm loading a new block of food into the cage of the feeder every other day.

They wrap their tail feathers on the underside of the feeder for balance.

Red-bellied woodpeckers are one of the few birds we see here in Upstate NY that stay around all winter.

With the bird's back turned toward the lens of the camera we get a really good view of the Mohawk hair feather style this fellow likes to sport.

It's always a lot of fun participating in this contest and seeing what others have posted, all of which would be impossible without the dedication of @nelinoeva, @melinda010100, and @barbara-orenya.
