๐ฆ The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)
๐ Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): โA small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter โ(from: Jobling, 2010)
๐ hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish
These flycatchers are among the first in their family to arrive. The very beginning of spring, there is no more snow, it has melted, but the weather is still cold. Insects, as you understand, are catastrophically few, and this bird is insectivorous.
However, this bird is not hungry, it is able to eat those insects that other birds do not eat. For example, such as stink bugs (Heteroptera) that appear in early spring.
