Zygentoma

Silverfish are so-called because of the silvery glitter of the scales covering the bodies. Their movement has been described as "fish-like" as if they were swimming. Most extant species have a body length less than 2 centimetres (0.79 in) long, though fossils about 6 cm long are known.

Zygentoma have dorsoventrally flattened bodies, generally elongated or oval in outline. Their antennae are slender and mobile. The compound eyes tend to be small or lacking. The mandibles are short, and the mouthparts unspecialised. Many species also have a number of short appendages on their abdominal segments, but the most distinctive feature of the group is the presence of three long, tail-like filaments extending from their last segment.

Silverfish may be found in moist, humid environments or dry conditions, both as free-living organisms or nest-associates. In domestic settings, they feed on cereals, paste, paper, starch in clothes, rayon fabrics and dried meats. In nature, they will feed on organic detritus. Silverfish can sometimes be found in bathtubs or sinks at night, because they have difficulty moving on smooth surfaces and so become trapped if they fall in.

Yep, that's not the reason. Just wanted to give you some basic knowledge about that little creatures. The story of why i chose this name starts when i was a kid, which then was triggered by a Hive blog and a search engine!

Hive, because Silver-blond Lizzie made a blog about the Sassy Silver Names and that made me think: "Hmm, how would i call myself?". So, off i went to a search engine, checking for some silver.

There happened some "Stranger than Fiction" thingy. Many Silverfish turned up in the search results. And in a really "bad" way. It showed me all the exterminator websites to get rid of these "terrible terrible" insects. With all the why's and how's to really keep them away. Like if they have done something really unforgivable.

While i saw all that "how to get rid of..." it triggered me deeply. The comparison into my family and social life as a kid was just "perfect". (Story in the genre TL;DR) And at that moment i decided to take Silverfish as my member name for blogs in the Silverblogger's Community.

I've seen many of these beautiful creatures in my life and they never did me any harm. And eating the paper in the books on the shelf of my parents does not count, since there where just novels and other crappy stuff. smirk

Conclusion

Next time you see a silverfish... please save it. It's worth the hassle. Maybe it's the one going to curate your next blog into the awesome Silverblogger's Community.

If ever you ask yourself why i'm talking about my Silverfish member name, you can say thank you to Silver Cat and Silverflower. I can't really say they forced me, since it was my own idea to put that into the how-to... so NO COMMENT! (But yeah, they kind of did) 😁

Also, you'll find the answer by clicking on this blue text! There you can read all about it and when you're a part of the Silverblogger's Community, you may follow the how-to and have your own silver name soon enough.
