Cuando Cuba, fue retornando a la normalidad luego del Covid; mi feed de redes sociales, se llenó de fotos de un lugar lleno de belleza natural , un lugar que no recorda haber visto nunca antes.
When Cuba was returning to normalcy after Covid, my social media feed was filled with photos of a place full of natural beauty, a place I didn't remember ever seeing before. [ENGLISH VERSION IS BELOW]
Si lees este artículo pensando que vamos a hablar de otro país, este no es el artículo. Te estaré hablando de un paraíso poco conocido y explotado de Cuba.
Empecé a investigar sobre las fotos que veía; a primera vista, no parecía un lugar de Cuba, tal vez era en México, ¿Nicaragua? , o algún paraíso en el Caribe. La fama que había alcanzado el lugar era tanto que no fue díficil descubrir de que lugar se trataba. Hoy estaremos hablando de mi primera visita a Puerto Escondido.
Al ser un lugar nuevo para mí, el espíritu viajero que llevo se despertó y se puso inquieto como un niño pequeño. Ya era hora de conocer este lugar.
Puerto Escondido está ubicado en la provincia de Mayabeque, muy cerca de la Habana y es una reserva florística, reserva de la flora y la fauna. Sin pensarlo, embullé a mi hermana y nos fuimos a conocer este lugar.
Al ir por nuestra cuenta, cogimos algunas guaguas y camiones para llegar hasta Puerto Escondido, nada cómodo, pero un viaje de mochileros, más improvisasdo que planeado. Solo disfrutar y dejarnos impresionar.
Para llegar al campamento universitario, hay que caminar una distancia considerable, por suerte, es loma abajo (los santos ayudan😅)
Antes de llegar a nuestro destino final, visitamos la Cueva del Pájaro (sin saberlo, luego nos enteramos de esto) Aquí comenzó el amor a primera vista. Nos encontramos, con un agua de un azul solo comparable con Varadero, sumamente limpia y cristalina. Teníamos que seguir para el campamento, así que no estuvimos mucho tiempo.

Al llegar al campamento, nos asignaron la que sería nuestra "casa" por las siguientes 48 horas. Una casita, pequeña, que valdría para mí y mi hermana.
No conocíamos a nadie en el campamento,por lo que volvimos a la cala (playuela), que habíamos visto, antes de llegar al campamento y posiblemente la razón por la que estabamos ahí. Son muchas las fotos que ví de esta playuela, ahora la tenía delante de mí
La playa, es un poco incómoda, es pequeña pero si le vemos el lado bueno; la arena no se te pega, no es de tanta profundida y al no haber muchas personas, casi nunca, está llena y por último puedes hacer unas fotos increíbles.

Nuestro barrio por 48 horas 😅
Cuando el sol, empezó a picar, decidimos volver al campamento a preparar nuestro almuerzo de viajeros. Un poco de espaguettis y unos perritos. Un lujo, considerando que en el lugar, solo hay un horno de leña para cocinar y ningua otra comodidad.
Después de reposar un poco el almuerzo y jugar en el campeonato de dominó del campamento, nos decidimos por hacer uno de los recorridos más famosos del lugar. El camino, nos llevaría hasta el mirador. El Encanto, la vista que más se repite en Internet de este lugar.
Al llegar al mirador, nos quedamos sin palabras 👆. Las vistas que teníamos delante, nos dejaron sin aliento. Desde este lugar, se ve tanto la línea costera, como el pueblo pesquero de la zona.
Por este pueblo, es que el lugar recibe su nombre y por lo que yo conocía este lugar, antes de la explosión del turismo de campamento.
Mi hermana y yo hablamos un poco, aprovechando la soledad y tranquilidad que nos acompañaba en aquel mirador. Aquí decidimos que debíamos regresar pronto. Nos habíamos enamorado del lugar.
El barrio y los vecinos
Al bajar, estábamos un poco cansados, decidimos quedarnos a sociabilizar con los otros campistas. Conocimos un poco a nuestros "vecinos" y nos llevábamos buenas historias y vivencias del lugar.
Llegaba la noche y oscurecía rápido, en el lugar se prendían algunas luces y algunas fogatas improvisadas. Todos nuestros "vecinos", se reunían y se armaba la fiesta.
Fue un momento innolvidable, del cual no tengo fotos, porque me quedé sin batería.

Me fuí a dormir temprano, el día había sido intenso y se me cerraban los ojos.La noche, fue un poco incómoda, el aire movía la carpa, que parecía un sonajero. Aunque, oír el sonido del mar, algún que otro barquito pasar y la tranquiliad de un campamento durmiente, creaban un ambiente muy relajante. Creo, que cualquiera puede tener un sueño de calidad en este lugar.
La mañana siguiente, comenzó temprano: di una vuelta buscando hacer algunas fotos para mis post y para mi equipo en la Habana, aproveché la tranquilidad y leí un poco, hacía mucho que no podía concentrarme tan bien.
Cuando regesé a la carpa, se levantaba mi hermana que desayunó y ya me preguntaba que haríamos en las horas que nos quedaban.
No hay mucho que hacer, así que nos decidimos por bañarnos en una playa que hay al otro lado de la desembocadura del río, detrás del campamento. El único acceso a esta playa, es cruzar la desembocadura nadando. No es un adistancia tan larga y en el medio, hay un banco de arena o una zona menos profunda, donde puedes descansar si lo deseas.
Nos pusimos las chancletas en cada brazo y empezamos a nadar. Paramos en el medio, miramos el paisaje que nos rodeaba, una lásstima no haber traído la Gopro, seguimos y llegamos a la playa. Nos tiramos en la arena, solo eramos mi hermama y yo.
El campamento, aún estaba despertándose, teníamos la playa, para nosotros solos por un tiempo más. La naturaleza viajera nos dió por caminar un recorrido que vimos que se hacía siguendo la línea costera. La peor decisión de todo el viaje.
Al estar en chancletas y el camino prácticamente virgen, cada paso era un desafío. Hay que darle un premio a las chancletas que soportaron el reto.Cuando nos cansamos de caminar, decidimos virar, no sin antes descansar un poco para enfrentar el nado de vuelta.
Al regresar al campamento, solo nos quedaban 4 horas; empezamos a recoger, almorzamos y nos preprarmos para irnos.
Misión cumplida, un destino más ✔️
Llegaba el momento que nadie quiere. Era la primera vez, que estábamos en Puerto Escondido y quedamos enamorado de la belleza del lugar, del ambiente del campamento y de lo bien que nos sentimos, a pesar de no tener muchas comodidades y que pudo ser mejor. Es un lugar, que todo cubano debería conocer y bajo esta idea, decidimos incluirlo entre los destinos de Estilo Viajero.
Para nuestra sorpresa, todo lo que brilla no es oro y tuvimos que tomar la díficil decisión de no incluir este detino en nuestras ofertas, sobre esta cuestión volveremos en próximos artículos.
Por ahora, solo nos resta recordar ese lugar tan hermosos, del que nos enamoramos a primera vista.

I started researching the photos I was seeing, and at first glance, it didn't seem like a place in Cuba. Maybe it was in Mexico or Nicaragua, or some paradise in the Caribbean. The fame that the place had gained made it easy to discover where it was. Today, we'll be talking about my first visit to Puerto Escondido.
Being a new place for me, the traveler spirit within me awakened and became as restless as a young child. It was about time to explore this place.
Flora and fauna reserve, biological station.
Puerto Escondido, is located in the province of Mayabeque, very close to Havana, and it's a floral reserve, home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Without hesitation, I convinced my sister and we set out to explore this place.
Traveling on our own, we took some buses and trucks to get to Puerto Escondido. It wasn't comfortable, but it was a backpacker's journey, more spontaneous than planned. Just enjoy and let ourselves be amazed.
To reach the university camp, you have to walk a considerable distance, luckily, it's downhill (thank the heavens).

Before reaching our final destination, we visited Cueva del Pájaro (unknowingly, we found out later). This is where love at first sight began. We stumbled upon water with a blue hue that can only be compared to Varadero, incredibly clean and crystal clear. We had to continue to the camp, so we didn't stay for long.
Upon arriving at the camp, we were assigned what would be our "home" for the next 48 hours. A small little house that would suffice for me and my sister.
Since we didn't know anyone at the camp, we decided to return to the cove (small beach) that we had seen before reaching the camp, possibly the reason why we were there. I've seen many photos of this cove, and now it was right in front of me (and you have it on your device too).
The beach is a bit snug, it's small, but if we look at the bright side, the sand doesn't stick to you, it's not too deep, and since there aren't many people, it's rarely crowded. Plus, you can take some incredible photos.

Our neighborhood for 48 hours
When the sun began to scorch, we decided to return to the campsite to prepare our traveler's lunch. Some spaghetti and hot dogs. It was a luxury considering that the place only had a wood-fired oven for cooking and no other amenities.
After resting a bit after lunch and playing in the campsite's domino championship, we decided to embark on one of the most famous routes in the area. The path would take us to El Encanto viewpoint, the most frequently seen view of this place on the internet.
When we arrived at the viewpoint 👆, we were left speechless. The views in front of us took our breath away. From this place, we could see both the coastline and the nearby fishing village.
It is because of this village that the place gets its name, and it's how I knew about this place before the camping tourism boom.
My sister and I talked a bit, taking advantage of the solitude and tranquility that accompanied us at that viewpoint. It was here that we decided we had to come back soon. We had fallen in love with the place.
The neighborhood and the neighbors
As we descended, feeling a bit tired, we decided to socialize with the other campers. We got to know our "neighbors" a bit and exchanged stories and experiences from the place.
Night was approaching fast, and lights and makeshift bonfires were lit in the area. All our "neighbors" gathered together, and the party began.
It was an unforgettable moment, but unfortunately, I don't have any photos because my battery ran out.

I went to bed early as the day had been intense, and my eyes were closing. The night was a bit uncomfortable as the wind moved the tent, making it sound like a rattle. However, hearing the sound of the sea, the occasional passing boat, and the tranquility of a sleeping campsite created a very relaxing atmosphere. I believe anyone can have a restful sleep in this place.
The next morning started early. I took a walk to take some photos for my posts and for my team in Havana. I took advantage of the tranquility and read a bit; it had been a while since I could concentrate so well.
When I returned to the tent, my sister was waking up, having breakfast, and already asking me what we would do in the remaining hours.
There isn't much to do, so we decided to swim at a beach on the other side of the river mouth, behind the campsite. The only access to this beach is by swimming across the river mouth. It's not a long distance, and in the middle, there's a sandbank or a shallower area where you can rest if you wish.
We put our flip-flops on each arm and started swimming. We stopped in the middle, looked at the surrounding landscape. It was a shame we didn't bring the GoPro. We continued swimming and reached the beach. We lay down on the sand; it was just my sister and me.
The campsite was still waking up, and we had the beach to ourselves for a little while longer. The wanderlust within us led us to walk along a path we saw following the coastline. It turned out to be the worst decision of the entire trip.
Being in flip-flops and on a practically untouched path, each step was a challenge. The flip-flops deserved an award for enduring the ordeal. When we got tired of walking, we decided to turn back, but not before resting a bit to prepare for the swim back.
When we returned to the campsite, we only had 4 hours left. We started packing up, had lunch, and prepared to leave.
Mission accomplished, one more destination ✔️
It was the moment no one wants to face. It was our first time in Puerto Escondido, and we fell in love with the beauty of the place, the atmosphere of the campsite, and how great we felt despite the lack of amenities. It's a place that every Cuban should visit, and with that in mind, we decided to include it among the destinations of Estilo Viajero.
To our surprise, not everything that glitters is gold, and we had to make the difficult decision not to include this destination in our offerings. We will address this issue in future articles.
For now, all we have left is to remember that beautiful place that we fell in love with at first sight.
