A traditional medicinal plant in Iranian folk medicine
Ferula assa-foetida L. (Apiaceae) is a medicinal plant
indigenous to Iran and Afghanistan.
This plant is one of the most important
among the thirty species of Ferula distributed in Iran.
It is an herbaceous and perennial plant that grows up to 2 m high.
One part used is an oleo-gum resin, called asa-foetida,
obtained by incision from the roots.
Ferula asafoetida is used in folk phytomedicine since antiquity
in traditional medicine for the treatment of several neurological
(anxiety, epilepsy, paralysis, hysteria and depression),
gastrointestinal
(intestinal parasites, flatulence, weak digestion, stomach ache),
respiratory (influenza, asthma), and reproductive disorders
(premature labour, unusually painful, difficult and excessive menstruation, leucorrhoea, and infertility).
Iran is one of the most important producers of this plant in the world.
