What are the warning signs and symptoms of bowel cancer?

New Delhi: Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, can affect people of all ages although it is more common in people over 50 years of age. According to health experts, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common cancer in women worldwide. In India, it is the third most common cancer among women and fourth in men. Bowel cancer is a cancer of the colon or rectum, located at the digestive tract's lower end. The problem with bowel cancer is that its symptoms can be subtle and don’t necessarily make you feel ill.

Therefore, bowel cancer symptoms can be mistaken for less serious health conditions - as most people with the symptoms related to colorectal cancer do not have cancer. However, being aware of the signs and learning more about bowel cancer can reduce your risk or help protect you against the disease. Bowel cancer, if diagnosed early, is very treatable. Hence, people whose cancer is diagnosed at an early stage have a much greater chance of successful treatment and than those whose cancer is detected at an advanced stage. The following are some common signs and symptoms of bowel cancer.

A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit
Abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always brought on by eating
Any lumps or mass in your tummy
Bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding) without any obvious reason
Blood in the stools without other piles (haemorrhoids) symptoms
Unexplained weight loss
Loss of appetite
Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
Although most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer, the NHS Choices suggests that you should seek medical help or consult a doctor, especially, if they persist for more than four weeks. Moreover, it is recommended to see your doctor if the symptoms persist or keep coming back after stopping treatment, regardless of their severity or your age.
Certain lifestyle modification can help prevent or decrease the chances of getting colorectal cancer. These include making healthy food habits like eating high fibre diet, not smoking, not binge drinking, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight, etc. While no cancer is completely preventable, you can reduce your risk of developing bowel cancer by making healthier lifestyle choices.
