Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.

  • Hepatitis is responsible for 1.34million death annually, almost the same rate as hiv/aids,tuberculosis and malaria.
    This inflammation could be due to infection and non infectious toxins.

There are five common types of hepatitis

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C
  • Hepatitis D
  • Hepatitis E

The non infectious agents include alcohol, drugs etc
Hepatitis B, C, and D are known to cause chronic infection and could be chronic infections and could be contracted through body fluids and blood While A and E cause acute infections and could be contracted through ingestion of contaminated water and food.

Common symptoms of hepatitis

  • Yellowness of the eyes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pale stool
  • Deep coloured urine
  • Weight loss

Complications of hepatitis

  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Liver cancer
  • Loss of life(death)

How to prevent hepatitis A and E
Do not drink contaminated water and eat contaminate food
Wash fruits and vegetables properly before consumption

How to prevent hepatitis B, C, D

Avoid sharing skin piercing instruments
Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse
Avoid unscreened blood transfusion and blood products

Other preventive measures include
Avoid alcohol and smoking abuse
Ensure that children are vaccinated with 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine within the first six(6) months of life
