Keeping Berries Fresh

Fresh berries
I love fresh berries.

This time of year, all the fresh berries come from Chile which put them a few days in transport and store shelf.

The issue with berries is that within a few days they will break down and get moldy.

This is annoying because when I want some fruit, I go to the fridge and find it moldy plus there is the expense of throwing away fruit.

So, my daughter shows us a little trick to get more days out of our fragile fruit.

The fruit is first washed in a sink of water with a ½ cup of vinegar and allowed to soak for about 15 minutes.

It is then rinsed and allowed to dry a bit, then it is ready for storage.

This is where the amazing part comes in

The soft fruit is put in mason jars and then into the refrigerator. The fruit will last up to 2 weeks this way.

This has been a new regimen in our house and we now have fresh fruit all week long.

We use this on strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.

It is awesome.
Thanks to my daughter, Katie!

Until next time,
John Novak
