According to Philippine legend, the lanzones fruit used to be poisonous and extremely sour. But one day, a woman and her child were traveling along a road, very hungry. Finding only lanzones trees around and having nothing else to eat, the woman reached for the poisonous fruit, pinched one open and fed it to her child. From then on, the lanzones became sweet and edible. The woman turned out to be the Virgin Mary.
