Our dearest and loved chocolate, taking the bitterness away, clears our mind and helps us stay with a good mood during those plans in life or goals to achieve. Because of that, if you found the first picture appetizing, keep on reading this delicious recipe.

The chocolate salami or also called the chocolate sausage, is a desert with a really simple preparation, which could be eaten cold from the fridge or even at an ambient temperature. This desert is really famous in Portugal, it was there where I was able to try it for the first time, you could easily imagine that every time I was there i wanted to keep eating and enjoying the local food. The best part is that the preparation does only need a couple ingredients, it is also great for those times when you just need to eat something sweet, even more when there’s chocolate involved.

INGREDIENTS

  1. 250 Gr. of maria cookies.
  2. 200 Gr. of pastry or dark chocolate.
  3. 1 egg.
  4. 150 Gr. of butter.
  5. 25 Gr. of cocoa.
  6. 50 Gr. of sugar. (Optional)
  7. 50 Gr. of hazelnuts. (Optional)

UTENSILS

  1. Cooking pot for the hot water bath.
  2. Mixing bowls or containers.
  3. Manual or electrical mixer.
  4. Waxed paper.
  5. Measuring cup.

PREPARATION

We put the cooking pot on a hot water bath to heat up and melt the 150 Gr of butter. We proceed to crush the maria cookies, we don’t need to crush them to powder, medium sized chunks are enough, we are going to put them on a big container or bowl, to be able to mix them later with the chocolate.

When the butter is completely melted on the water bath, we add the 200 Gr. of chocolate, and we proceed to wait for it to melt slowly.

We will then add the Cocoa, mix and if we want, we add the sugar, but this is only needed if the chocolate is too bitter or dark, but this remains optional.

In a separated bowl, we mix the egg for 5 or 10 minutes until it’s volume is two or three times the original, could be made with our own hands or with an electrical mixer. Once this happens, we add the mixed egg into the chocolate which should be still on the hot water bath.

Then we get the chocolate out of the hot water bath and we proceed to mix it with the crushed maria cookies and mix thoroughly. Optionally, you could add into the mix the hazelnuts after crushing them; this could give the chocolate some unique touch and special for our chocolate salami. Remember to mix well and distribute the ingredients as much as you can.

After the last step, we cut the waxed paper approximately 60cms long, we put it over our table, and we proceed to pour our mixture over the paper giving it a long shape, as we can see in the picture. This mixture will gain a solid consistency after the next steps, don’t you worry about that.

We will carefully wrap our chocolate on the waxed paper as if it was a salami, and with our hands, we will unify and compact the mixture until it gets the consistency we want. I would recommend not making the salami completely circular, giving it a flat side, as I’m showing on the picture. After this, remove the exceeding paper, and roll the sides to avoid getting air inside. Then we will put the salami on the fridge for around 3 to 5 hours approximately.

IT’S READY!

We can serve the salami now and enjoy a Sunday beautiful as it is today!. This is a really simple desert, with few ingredients, its preparation could take around half an hour, the only problem is to not open the fridge while we are waiting for it to be ready. It’s a great desert and snack for the children, and not so expensive for our pockets.

Now it’s your turn!
