Work has gotten so boring lately the human has taken to knitting to alleviate it. -- Anon Guest

The best thing for a Ships' Human to have is a boring job. That's what the old hands tend to say and the younger ones tend to puzzle about. Time tells all of the truth.

Human Dee was just starting to appreciate having a dull job. On the other hand, they still needed something to do.

The scientists were as safe as they could be, given that this was a Havenworld. If it had threats to life or limb, they were easily overcome. The crew learned the hazards quickly and didn't even need Dee around.

They ran through their usual entertainments in a week. So there was no other recourse than to start a hobby.

Dee didn't need to keep a journal. There were mission logs for that. fiction was not Dee's forte. That left arts and crafts.

There were soft fibre sources all over the place, which lead Dee to investigate making string or yarn with it. They had some incredible success at that over the months of scientific inquiry.

Which lead, inevitably, to what to do with the resulting skeins of yarn.

Dee printed two pointy sticks with knobs on the end and taught themself to knit.

On one hand, it kept Dee busy. On the other hand, nobody knew what to do with all those hand-crafted scarves.
