It was a terribly sad day for Mary when she woke up in the morning. She has been dreading this day for many years, and she couldn't believe that it came so quickly. She has tried to prepare herself for this day, but she knew that she would never be perfectly ready.

Everyone else in the house was up early and sounded excited and cheery.  George was downstairs making breakfast, and when she went downstairs she felt as if it was the last breakfast that they were ever going to have together as a family.

She ate her food in silence, and couldn't shake this horrible feeling of despair and sadness. She drank her coffee while she stared at her son opposite her.

She could still remember the first time when she brought him home. He was wrapped in a blue blanket, and she felt so happy and content. She loved being a mom, and she was so terribly proud of her son. He grew up to be a stable handsome young man with his feet firmly on the ground, but she wondered if he was ready to go out in this big bad world, and she knew she was not ready to let him go.

George hooked up the trailer and loaded everything.  They were ready to go in less than an hour, and she tried to take longer than usual to clean the kitchen. Every minute was one more minute that she could keep him here.

George hooted outside, and she felt annoyed when she finally took the passenger seat in the car. They drove in silence for a while and she ticked off the list in her head. She was sure that he wouldn't need anything else in the dorms where he was going to stay.

They were there faster than she could imagine, and George and Jared quickly packed out everything. She helped to pack his clothes in his closet, and his sister helped him to put up posters.

Everyone was making jokes and having fun, but Mary couldn't laugh with them. It felt as if her heart was going to break into two, and she had to fight the tears when they had to say their final goodbye.

It was over faster than she wanted it to be. Jared walked down to the car with them and watched them as they drove away. Mary stared out the window and George tried to cheer her up but nothing helped. A piece of heart had stayed behind on campus. She could just hope and pray that what they tried to teach him in the years when he grew up, would be enough....she had to let him fly on his own now.

Halfway home she heard a beep on her phone. She checked the message and saw that it was from Jared.

I love you mom. Don't be sad...I'll be ok. See you soon.

She smiled, and held the phone on her heart. For the first time that day she realized that everything was going to be just fine.
