Sometimes Beauty Is Only Skin Deep

That week Isabella had arrived at her parents' store to help them. She, with her tender red mouth, almond eyes, smelling of flowers and spring, entered the supermarket smiling and full of charm. She had never been interested in going to the store, but since she had a vacation from college and was bored at home, she wanted to go and surprise her parents. At first they looked for excuses for her to go, but when they saw that she was really interested in working, they explained the operation of the supermarket to her and even allowed her to notice one of the cash registers. Time flew by for Isabella, especially after she saw the young man in charge of arranging the merchandise on the shelves. All day long she looked for him, through the mirrors and cameras of the store. He had barely looked at her, yet Isabella couldn't stop sighing at the sight of the tall, white-skinned, blond haired man. An unexpected chill came when he turned to see her and found her looking at him carefully. What a pity, she thought, blushing and her heart pounding.

The next few days of that week were the happiest for Isabella. Watching the boy from afar, arranging the goods, walking through the corridors, carrying boxes and bringing them back, were small victories for her. She tried not to let her eyes betray her or the insistent need to get close to the boy. Between one customer and another, the girl furtively sought out the slim figure of the boy who ignored her completely. Every morning, Isabella took the best clothes out of her closet and although she was beautiful from head to toe, she spent hours getting ready, rehearsing smiles, modulating a few words. She didn't prepare for work. She was preparing for her first meeting with the boy. She sensed that the boy would approach her at some point, under some pretext, attracted by her beauty. She was so used to male attention that she knew that some men used indifference as a weapon of seduction; others were simply overwhelmed to see a woman as perfect as she was. The hunt is an exercise in patience, she thought and sighed.

The next week, he felt he had to get close to her, at least to know her name, since he had not dared to ask anyone so as not to arouse suspicion. Isabella had waited for a glance from the boy or a minimal approach that never came, so she had to take the initiative, take the first step. On Monday morning, dressed up and beautiful, Isabella looked for an excuse to approach the boy and found it. She approached him, pale, excited, almost unable to breathe, and asked him: "Where are the canned goods? The boy, sitting on a wooden stool, while he was setting the prices for the products, did not look up and only said: "In aisle 4". Isabella felt the whole world breathing down her neck, shuddered, but was not discouraged and asked again: "Do you work here? The boy looked up and, with his eyes closed, looked at the girl without much interest: "Yes, I'm in charge of setting the prices. My name is John. After that, the boy returned to his work and Isabella had no choice but to go to the cash register. With that answer, the girl felt a pain in her stomach for the certainty of defeat.

After August, Isabella had to go back to school and her usual routine. After that failed encounter between her and the boy, she didn't want to go back to the family supermarket anymore; she had already lost all interest. But one afternoon, while he was chatting with his friends and eating an ice cream, the boy arrived with a girl. Isabella, nervous at first, fixed her gaze on the boy, who as always was handsome and slender. Then she looked curiously at the girl next to him: fat, small, with irregular features and not very beautiful. He saw, with surprise, the look of love that the boy gave the girl, how she shook his hand, how she caressed his hair. Antonella's heart turned over. She never felt that a man looked at her with such love, admiration and fervor. She was jealous. For the first time Antonella wanted to change all her beauty for a look like that one; to change her kingdom, for a love like that one. There are women who have everything they desire, she thought and sighed.
