Ugadi - New Year's Day in South India

Ugadi

New Year is celebrated on January 1st.
But according to hindu calender, we celebrate New Year's on this day.

We worship the gods, prepare festive food and delicacies. We eat bevu-bella (neem leaves and jaggery) , it signifies that life is filled with both sweet and bitter moments.

I have put up a picture of festive food(pic #1). It usually has sweet, sprouts salad, lemon rice, plain rice(to be eaten with sambar or rasam) , ghee, dal(cooked lentils) and a sabzi.

For sweet I have prepared obattu (also known as holige/puran poli). It is like a sweet bread. (Pic #2)
