Good day dear steemians, I trust you’re having an interesting day. I was taking a little taught or I will rather say reflection on my journey so far as a student and fashion designer.
If you have talent and passion or you love doing something (tailoring) and at the same time you are a student. Like seriously, there is nothing stopping you from doing the both together as far as you are capable and there is passion for it.
Don’t just give up because you are scare or you don’t know how to go about it. Doing it later might be too late, not even in this country (Nigeria) we are today. I won’t lie to you most of Nigerian student or let me say averagely are combining academics, entrepreneurship and hand work together.
I will be given you some ideas on how to go about it, but it all about determination and focus. No matter how hard you tried without your determination and being focus, you will just jeopardize the both at once.
How to go about it
- What you are to do first is to check yourself academically, can you really do this, is this going to affect me if I go for it. If you think you can do without you being affected then you are good to go.
- Check your life as a fashion designer (someone who designs clothing), a stylist. Do you have confident as a professionally in what you have passion for. Is another thing to know or to be at it but you lack confident?
Clothes are important need of an individual. And it is through fashion that these clothes are an important part of fashion.
Fashion is an art of creating wears, accessories and the likes.
What you need to know as a fashion designer
As a fashion designer your main objective is to create and develop various designs
How well do you relate with people. Because your relationship with your customers matters a lot as a fashion designer, no matter how good or professionally you are if your relationship with your customer is poor I tell you it will affect your work.
You must be up to date with emerging fashion trends. Don’t be left out in anything.
Managing marketing, finances and other business activities, on a self-employed basis
To be a successful fashion designer you cannot solely depend on creative talents. You must be responsible for managing your label as a business
Fashion designer need to go deep in what they do, you need to international fashion trends, sketch your designs based on ideas, choose your color, fabric and the styles.
Understanding the various aspects of designing technique is necessary. For example, layering, selecting appropriate production necessary and using toils and embellishments for producing patterns.
Attend fashion show for more knowledge on latest trends and methods in fashion designing.
A fashion designer must have a strong background in textiles, and a strong tendency towards fashion trends.
As a fashion designer your dressing matters a lot, because through your dressings people will know and see what you are made of.
The major thing you should avoid most is “disappointment” try as much as possible not to disappoint your customers so as to protect your reputation at any time anywhere.
Avoid rough(texture that has much friction. Not smooth. Uneven) work. Finishing is what makes your work perfect and neat.
When you are doing what you love to do, no one has to motivate you. Don’t waste your life in a job that doesn’t express your heart. Make sure you are happy doing your work.
Your emotional heartbeat is the second key to understanding your shape for service. Don’t ignore your interests. Your interest in the work must be certain.
When you don’t have a heart for what you are doing, you are easily discouraged. Your heart must be there.
We have all heard people say,
“I took a job I hate in order to make a lot of money, so someday I can quit and do what I love to do.”
That’s a big mistake. Don’t go into it.
Don’t worry about how fast you grow, but be concerned about how strong you grow.
Don’t be in an hurry to make it quickly. There is no growth without change, no change without fear or loss, and no loss without pain. Everything on earth has its own time and its own season.
You will never know what you’re good at until you try. You have dozens of hidden styles and ideas you don’t know you’ve got because you’ve never tried them out. So I encourage you to start doing, making, creating styles that you’ve never done before.
Great opportunities often disguise themselves in small tasks. Never look down on any of your customers, no matter how small the person may be.
Be committed to your work.
Having an idea is not important, what really counts are how you express it. Fashion designer should speak with conviction and faith so that the prospective customers trust him/her.
As a fashion designer there are some certain skills that is required of you
Your sense of creativity, innovation and your knack or talent for designing fashionable styles.
Organizational and time management skills are required of you.
Negotiation skills. How you negotiate with your customers matters a lot.
You must possess the ability to work individually and as a team.
Your communication and interpersonal skills is necessary.
Awareness: commercial awareness and business orientation skills is also necessary.
Determination on color schemes, patterns and designs.
Be up to date. Be current with the fashion world.
Seeing life from fashion’s view.
We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.
Fashion is something that comes from your within.
