The middle stage
When the qualities of human behaviour are divided into three stages, the first and last stages are the two 'extremes', causing much suffering.
The middle stage though, is where all goodness lies, and is therefore, quite unique in this manner.
For instance:
Between
'cowardice' and 'recklessness'
lies
'courage' ...
Between '
'stinginess' and 'spendthriftness'
lies '
'generosity' ...
Between '
'laziness' and 'overeagerness'
lies '
'ambition' ...
Between '
'humility and 'snobbery'
lies '
'dignity' ...
Between '
'secrecy' and 'boastfulness'
lies '
'honesty' ...
Between '
'grumpiness' and 'silliness'
lies '
'humour' ...
Between '
'animosity' and 'flattery'
lies '
'friendliness' ...
Between '
'hesitation' and 'foolhardiness'
lies '
'tolerance' ...
This golden middle stage though, is not something, that can be calculated to perfection. For it always changes, depending on different situations. One therefore, requires much contemplative wisdom, to be able to discern and improve such qualities.
To excel in anything, one must not only do formal study, but also practice habitually, throughout one's daily life.
