The Birds

In case you started reading first, before clicking on the audio... I want you to start out, by clicking play on the audio file. If possible, wear headphones.

Now continue reading...

You will hear loads of different birds. All of them were sitting on - and around - the terrain where I'm staying these days. Some of them probably still are. Can you hear how alive they are? How very much in the moment? We don't need to remind birds to stay in the moment, to be mindful. It's only natural to them.

Birds don't look back at the past in a nostalgic way. They don't stress out over the future. They are just focused on the present moment. Why do you think they are singing that much? Why do you think they always seem cheerful?

What would you do if you had nothing to worry about ( no job you disliked, no difficult relationship, no debts to pay off ? ). What if you could just focus on the now. Are you hungry? Get yourself some food. Are you tired? Get some rest? Are you thirsty? Drink. How are you feeling right now? What can you do about it. That's how birds think, with their little bird brains. And no, not all birds are stupid.

As is the case with most animals, they are actually way more clever than us, humans, when it comes to understanding the purpose of life: being happy most of the time, no matter the circumstances. By focusing on what we really need, right now.

So, whenever you feel down, whenever your mind is drifting off and stressing out over the past or the future, focus on the birds. Whistle or sing along with them. It is instant happiness. Do what birds do and take care of what you can take care of right now, to feel better.

P.S. If you're one of those people who have never seen Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic The Birds, go give it a watch. And no. the birds in this movie aren't typical birds. That film should have a disclaimer telling us that 'if you don't see any similarities with birds that you know from real life, it's because it's a work of fiction.
