When you approach the Old City from the East, most probably you are going to see the Citadel, which is a castle like fortress with moat (dried), draw-bridge and towers. Now the Citadel is a museum with lots of display on the history of Jerusalem. It is a must to get acquainted with this history, so that you know what has happened and why so many places are significant. There is a fee for the entrance. Once inside, the first thing to do is to climb up to the top of the Tower, where you can have a good panoramic view. There are many rooms with models and 3D displays that are very informational. If you are interested, you can spend half a day here. There is a free guided tour too, and the guide will lead you to areas off limit to common tourists. That is worthwhile to joining the group.
