Full lockdown means big problems for homeless dogs

While Krabi Animal Welfare does do the best it can to feed the homeless animals of the area we are facing two very big problems as movement becomes more and more restricted.

For one thing, the police who are enforcing limited movement between areas do not consider feeding homeless animals to be important enough to let us through the barricades and to make matters worse, the temples, markets, and various other businesses that helped to provide food of some sort for these animals are no longer open so that creates further strain on how much we need to do to feed these hungry bellies.

I can understand how a majority of people would consider stray animals to be of lessor importance than human life and it would be ridiculous for me to suggest otherwise - I too agree with that sentiment, but now is the time when we are really hoping that some sort of benefactor can come through for us during these times.

We have appealed to the local authorities to simply let us through the checkpoints to simply drop off bags of food to the hot spots and have a local distribute it for us, that much we believe we can arrange since the police are being extremely serious about not allowing any non-essential persons through the lockdowns.

To us it seems quite heartless that any live animal would be considered non-essential, especially in a predominantly Buddhist country but that does seem to be the case.

It breaks our hearts to sit here realizing that many of the animals that we have helped in the past are very unlikely to receive any food during this lockdown but we are prepared to do whatever it takes in order to at least give some level of minimum help during these difficult times.

We have been reaching out to the local community and have found people that will feed the animals in these locations but are not in a financial position to do so with their own money. We are also stepping back to a much cheaper version of the dog food, and mixing it with rice to further extend how many of these homeless animals as possible. The cats that we assist are likely going to be in a much more difficult situation, as they don't come out to greet us when we arrive.

We will continue to do what we do, and are even digging into our own pockets from other jobs in order to do so. We hope that this Coronavirus situation can change quickly so we can get back to helping the street dogs and cats before it is too late.
