Thanjai Temple - An Unknown Wonder Built In 1003 AD

Thanjai Periya Kovil was built by the Great Tamil King Arun Mozhi Varman. Arulmozhi varman was a renowned king who ruled over the Chola kingdom of southern India between 985 and 1014 CE. During his reign, the Cholas expanded beyond South India with their domains stretching from Sri Lanka in the south to Kalinga in the north. Raja Raja Chola also launched several naval campaigns that resulted in the capture of the Malabar Coast as well as the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

In 1010, Raja fabricated the Thanjai periya kovil in Thanjavur devoted to Lord Shiva. The sanctuary and the capital went about as a focal point of both religious and financial action.

It is otherwise called Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajeswaram.

It is one of the biggest sanctuaries in India and is a case of Dravidian engineering amid the Chola period.The sanctuary handed 1000 years of age over 2010. The sanctuary is a piece of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Incomparable Living Chola Temples", with the other two being the Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara sanctuary.

The vimanam (sanctuary tower) is 216 ft (66 m) high. The Kumbam (the zenith or the bulbous structure on the best) of the sanctuary is cut out of a solitary shake and weighs around 80 tons.There is a major statue of Nandi (consecrated bull), cut out of a solitary shake estimating around 16 feet long and 13 feet high at the passageway. The whole sanctuary structure is made out of stone, the closest wellsprings of which are around 60 km toward the west of sanctuary. The sanctuary is a standout amongst the most went to vacation destinations in Tamil Nadu.
