When I turned 36, I felt far too old to do things that young people do, and far too young to do things that older people do. My thirties were a wonderful time in my life because I felt healthy and confident; I made the right decisions without giving them too much thought. At that time, another friend of hers ran a guesthouse in Choroní – one of the best beaches in the Caribbean – and she let us stay there, so the two of us went to the beach, along with her eldest daughter. I had a brilliant time; the village of Choroní has a lighthouse shaped like a ship – it’s beautiful – and visiting it was quite an experience. We spent the whole day at the beach and I revelled in the views and the sound of the waves. We returned in the afternoon; her husband came to pick us up at the town’s bus station, and they decided to take me home.
