Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a museum in Copenhagen. It houses both ancient Mediterranean sculptures from Egypt, Rome and Greece, as well as modern sculptures, as well as Danish and French paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries of impressionism and post-impressionism.

The holdings date back to the art collection of the Danish industrialist Jacob Christian Jacobsen, whose son Carl Jacobsen donated the collection to the public in 1888.

The name stems from the the brewery Carlsberg with the additions New and Glyptothek, so new sculpture collection. Jacobsen chose this name out of enthusiasm for the Glyptothek in Munich. For the collection, the building was built on Dantes Plads in Copenhagen, designed by the architects Vilhelm Dahlerup and Hack Kampmann. Even today, the museum is supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Nasotheque

A Nasotheque is a repository for noses of portrait busts and statues. Ancient statues and busts are often handed down in a damaged condition. Noses are particularly common, but also other protruding body parts. These were reconstructed until the 19th century. In the twentieth century a turning point began to emerge: since then, in archeology, the authenticity of finds has been considered to be more important than their completeness and their original appearance, which in any case can only be speculated on. Therefore, the reconstructed noses were removed from the exhibited antique statues and busts. The sometimes elaborately crafted noses were not disposed of, but collected in specially designed Nasotheques. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen is exhibiting its nasotheque to show the public the change in exhibition practice.
