Alfred Nobel the Swedish Chemist who invented dynamite in 1866, was born in Helensborg, Sweden in 1833. Emmanuel Nobel an industrialist and Sarah his wife were his parents.
Alfred had his education in schools in Helensborg and later in a High School in St Petersburg (present Leningrad), Russia. He got the opportunity to study in a Russian school because Emmanuel Nobel moved to St Petersburg with his family in search of prosperity.
Emmanuel Nobel produced bombs for Tzar Nicholas and the latter provided the former with all facilities and paid him a large salary. In his childhood and youth, Alfred excelled in science and especially in chemistry, and Emmanuel sent his bright son on a tour to Europe. After the tour Alfred joined his father and assisted him with the knowledge he had acquired abroad.
When Tzar Nicholas died, the Nobels had to face hardships, and their industry collapsed. Emmanuel and his wife left for Sweden, leaving Alfred and his brothers in Petersburg to look after their business.
Alfred Nobel who toiled day and night with numerous and dangerous experiments to revive the family business invented dynamite in 1866 and patented a more powerful explosive, gelignite in 1876.
With the fortune he made from the manufacture of explosives, he founded the Nobel Prize, in 1895. It is reported that Bertha Von Sutner, an Austrian lady philanthropist persuaded him to set up the fund.
Alfred Nobel who earned the vicious nickname ‘The Seller of Death’ passed away a sick and lonely man in his mansion in French Riviera, South East France, on the 10th December 1896.
Lady Sutner was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1905.
