Greetings dear community of
@holos-lotus, may God bless you abundantly in all aspects of your lives. May God bless you abundantly in all aspects of your lives.
In these days talking with some people we were referring to facts of sadness and pain of others, news of difficult situations that people were living. Of all these events they said "it is normal", "these things happen", "it is nothing, it always happens", without showing any degree of sympathy for what these people were going through. That touched my heart and made me reflect.
When did other people's misfortunes, illnesses, other people's suffering become so normal that we don't even feel any scandal about it? We do not even have an expression of sympathy, "I am so sorry", "it is a sad event", "let's pray for those people", "what a bad situation", or any phrase that denotes concern or sadness for the other, for their suffering. Could it be that compassion is being lost? I want to reflect on compassion and the need we have to be compassionate.
Compassion is a feeling of sadness that we feel when we see that someone suffers or has some suffering, this feeling drives us in turn to perform actions to eliminate or alleviate the suffering of that person.
We are living in a hard and hostile world, difficult for some people more than others. There are people alone in hospitals with no one to give them a word of encouragement, children begging for money in the streets, old people selling things to survive, people suffering alone the loss of a loved one and many other situations.
Have you ever bought something for a child or an elderly person without needing it just to help them? I have done it, I am sure you have too, it is true that it hurts to see an elderly person who should be resting and still working to eat? It is also sad to see children begging or selling things when they should be playing or studying. Have you asked these children if they are studying?
My children scolded me several times for coming into the house and telling them to sit down while I prepared something for them. One day I washed my children's little pants and waited for them to come in and give them to them, how happy they were. Then I talked to a friend from church and we tried to locate their house and went to bring them a few things they gave us at church. They haven't been here for a while, now other children are selling candy. Compassion moves us to try to do something, we do very little individually, but what if we all do it? Maybe we can be lights that illuminate the darkness of this world.
Sometimes the need is not money, sometimes it is companionship, a word of encouragement or other things that are not necessarily money. As that old man or old woman, our relative or neighbor, has everything material, but lives alone, a visit can greatly brighten their day, knowing that someone listens to their stories that they repeat over and over again. It can also be a friend that we know is going through a difficult family moment, having words of comfort for her will surely be well appreciated. I don't know, I think if we all do a little bit, looking around us we can see the needs and be compassionate. Being compassionate is a virtue, maybe as they say we can't change this difficult world, but we can help change a person's life.
There is much we can do for others, the problem is that we are immersed in the self, in ourselves and it is not our fault, the pace of life is very demanding, but if we stop for a moment and look around sure we can see in a friend, neighbor or family member an ailment, situation or need in which we can help, it is not always monetary, the needs are diverse.
Do you know what is the best thing about helping others? The practice of these actions are for our benefit as well, they contribute to our personal growth, they make us better people, they give us satisfaction and a sense of well being. Besides, God blesses us in many ways when we help his children, he says "Truly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me" (Matthew 25:40). Remember what I said about the little pants I gave to the children? Well, my youngest son had stretched a lot, he almost had no pants, after that he was given 3 pants as a blessing from God.
Compassion is well-being for others and also for us.
Thank you for joining me in this reflection, God bless you immensely.
