The term "altcoin" refers to all other cryptocurrencies apart from Bitcoin. There are a lot of altcoins out there, but people don't know much about them. Because of this, people who are just starting to learn about altcoins have a lot of questions about them. As mentioned, the word "altcoin" refers to any digital coins which aren't Bitcoin. It is an abbreviation of the phrase "Bitcoin alternative."
This term describes each and every one of the cryptocurrencies constantly emerging. These digital coins are called altcoins because they are all aiming to either take the place of Bitcoin or improve on one or more of Bitcoin's components. Currently there are hundreds if not thousands of altcoins in existence. As each day goes by more and more altcoins emerge. At best, most of these altcoins are simply clones of Bitcoin. As such they won't last very long.
The developers of these coins only modify some of Bitcoin's features, such as the speed of transactions, the hashing algorithm, or the distribution method to name just a few. However, there are also some substantial altcoins out there which are gaining more and more followers. These altcoins not only improve upon Bitcoin but they also have their own special features which set them apart and make them more appealing.
The developers of these substantial altcoins come with innovations by experimenting with some useful features that Bitcoin doesn't have. For instance, Ripple isn't only a cryptocurrency, it also works as a protocol the users may utilize to easily perform inter-currency payments. Then there is Dash, which provides a platform for users to conduct transactions which are fully anonymous There are even some altcoins which make use of Bitcoin's blockchain to make new platforms secure.
Many Bitcoin enthusiasts claim that altcoins are completely unnecessary. They say that these alternative coins won't even be able to rival Bitcoin's infrastructure and so they may not succeed. Despite all of this, altcoins still play an important role. Through the altcoins, developers can come up and experiment with new and different features, those which Bitcoin doesn't have. Of course, the developers of Bitcoin may also copy these innovations if they see that they would improve the cryptocurrency. This may make the leading currency all the more unbeatable.
