Greetings, inhabitants of Splinterlands! It is @zoe01 again and once more I shall be sharing one of my recent Frontier Ranked battles with you all, where this time I once more decided to use the great summoner Thalgrimore, though with a very different set of circumstances than my previous one.
I was granted a battle with 38 mana and with Weak Magic as the ruleset; this prompted me to think very carefully about what monsters I should bring with me as magic would have a different impact than I was used to.
The available elements were also very limited, with only Earth and Death provided, making me plan a mix of strong defensive abilities and different attack types.
Before entering the arena, I checked the battle conditions.
Battle Details
Mode: Frontier Ranked
Mana Cap: 38
Ruleset: Weak Magic
Modifier: All units gain Void Armor.
Available Splinters: Earth and Death
This battle held a very interesting ruleset of Weak Magic.
Under this ruleset, all units gained Void Armor, meaning that magic damage hit the armor before reducing the monster's health, potentially making magic attackers less scary than they are, specially if monster's with enough armor are present.
Because of this, I wanted to ensure my team was not overly reliant on magic damage and tried to use a lineup where different abilities could help me fight the opponent.
For this battle, I decided on using my Death summoner Thalgrimore again. I have enjoyed the experimentation with Thalgrimore and this battle gave me another chance to see how the lineup will perform in a completely different ruleset.
Summoner: Thalgrimore
Position 1: Spellmonger (No attack)
Position 2: Nim Guard Captain (Melee attack)
Position 3: Sorrow Harvester (Magic attack)
Position 4: Vengeful Monk (Melee attack)
Position 5: Lenore Nevermore (Ranged atatck)
This time I had enough mana to build a five-monster lineup, giving me a lot more options than my previous low-mana battle.
I placed Spellmonger in the first position, where it only had 1 health, so I was not expecting it to be the best tank. However, it had some very useful abilities, including Thorns and Void Armor, which could prove very useful against certain attacks.
Behind it I placed Nim Guard Captain. With its Void and Void Armor, I felt that it could be a good monster to have near the front of the lineup, specially as magic attacks would be impacted by the ruleset.
Then I added Sorrow Harvester. Its Weaken ability was something I really liked, as it reduced the maximum health of all enemy units by 1, making big jumps in health much more difficult if the opponent has monsters with lower health.
I used Vengeful Monk. It has Opportunity, so it can target the enemy unit with the least health. I felt that this would work nicely alongside Sorrow Harvester, as it could finish off the weaker targets after the enemy monsters began to lose health.
Finally, I placed Lenore Nevermore further back as one of my main ranged attackers. Lenore has Snipe, allowing it to target non-melee monsters behind the enemy's frontline. I always like having a monster that can put pressure on the backline rather than attacking only the tank.
My opponent this time was ZOBE22, who was playing with the Consorte title.
Upon seeing the opponent's lineup, I knew that I could not simply assume that my team would win outright. They had a very strong frontline and some very dangerous monsters behind it.
My lineup was also a little unusual with Spellmonger sitting in the first position. With only 1 health, I was expecting it to go down rather quickly.
Meanwhile, Sorrow Harvester's Weaken was helping my team, as it reduced the maximum health of the enemy monsters. I really like abilities like this, as their impact is felt throughout the battle rather than it directly dealing damage.
Another monster that I was happy to have was Lenore Nevermore.
Its Snipe ability allowed it to target an enemy monster behind the frontline, giving me another way to put pressure on the opponent rather than simply attacking their tank over and over again.
As the battle continued, my lineup held well together.
It was a very nice example of why I enjoy experimenting with different lineups. Smetimes a team does not need every monster to perform the same job and having several different abilities working together can greatly improve the effectiveness of the lineup as a whole.
Winning the battle gave me the following rewards:
Victory in Frontier Ranked
+20 Rating
Silver III Progress
The +20 Rating was especially nice, as it boosted my rating to 1040.
That means I am continuing to make progress in Silver III, and every little victory feels good when attempting to climb up the ranks.
I am still experimenting with different teams and learning which cards are best under different rulesets, so having these victories along the way make the journey much more enjoyable.
I also received a nice reward from my Lux Favor daily spin.
This time I received:
+75 Sparks
+8 Bonus Sparks
I wasn't given a huge reward, but I was happy regardlessz, hehe.
I always enjoy checking the daily spin, as you never know what it might give. Even a little amount of Sparks is useful, specially as you slowly collect them for the Spark Shop.
Okay, so this battle reminded me that the ruleset can have a major impact on how I should build my team.
With Weak Magic, I knew that relying heavily on magic attacks would not necessarily be the best idea, as each unit had Void Armor, so instead, I tried to use a more balanced lineup with different abilities.
Have you tried playing Weak Magic with a mixed lineup like this? Which monster do you usually rely on when Void Armor is present? I would love to hear your strategies in the comments!
Have you played splinterlands before? If not make sure to play it now. Here's the link
