Happy Easter to you all!
We are having a very relaxed Easter Friday at home resting and filling up on gorgeous chocolate Hot Cross Buns. I hope you’ve managed to have a relaxing Easter. The weather couldn’t be better here in Kommetjie today.
I’m a second hand bargain hunter, always on the lookout for a deal or a special piece that I can makeover. I’m on a couple buy and sell WhatsApp groups and keep and eye on Facebook Marketplace. I got quite excited last Sunday afternoon when a cute writing desk popped up on our community buy / sell group!
Our bedroom is quite small so space is limited and my husbands office is already in my sons bedroom, so organising a small workspace for myself has been a challenge. So when I saw this little desk and got the measurements back I just had to get it.
The old space was purely functional as storage come “bedside table” and the old drawers just didn’t suit my aesthetic. I’m a sucker for traditional with a modern twist and at the same time like to represent where we’re from (South Africa of course). A little bit of print goes a long way.
I picked up the desk - all fitting neatly into my car - and got home to give it a scrub down. Just a quick clean removed some of the blue marks, I’m imagining it was paint transfer from something else, as well as the grubby marks.
Then I remembered that I had bought a can of white spray paint last week to spray a planting pot. I quickly gave the worst scratches a little touch up and left it to dry. (My grass may have some white patches that will need to recover)
I finally managed to move the ugly drawers out and put my new writing desk in position and I am just so happy!!! It fitted perfectly.
Now not only do I have a “bedside table” but an actual space to work. It’s been over a year since I’ve had a desk and looking at the this little gem with the raised shelf and tiny drawers, with turned legs just makes me happy. I added a tall cowhide print ottoman for now and absolutely love the contrast that it creates against the white desk.
I’ve also added a small wooden car made in Cuba that my aunt brought back on her travels and a beautifully scented candle from Babylontoren Wine Estate in the Franshoek Valley.
I’m always aware of how small but significant things can make you feel good and change the atmosphere of a room.
Today I’m enjoying the fruits of this little project with my Chocolate Hot Cross bun and coffee at my writing desk. Sometimes you just need to sit back and enjoy life - even if it’s the simple things.
