-Tijera, alfileres, hilo negro, color blanco.
-Máquina de coser.
Empecemos:

Maybe you thought it was a carnival mask, but no—this one’s forever. It’s for sleeping. A while back, I made one using a pattern I saw online, but it really didn’t fit me well. It felt too small, and I didn’t want it anymore, because if it’s for sleeping, it should be comfortable so you can sleep more soundly and pleasantly, don’t you think?
Since my sewing machine was already set up, I decided to make another one this time, but I made the pattern to my own liking. So I took advantage of a piece of cardboard that comes with some ankle socks—but it was too short—so I measured myself: starting from my ears, I left a space of two fingers’ width, marked it off with a measuring tape, and it came to about 25 cm. Using the cardboard from the socks, I folded it in half to make it longer, and that’s how I cut out the pattern.
Now, here’s how I did it.
Materials:
-Mask pattern.
-Black suede-like fabric. (A scrap I had lying around.)
-White felt or fleece. (Any color will do.)
-1.5 cm wide elastic.
-Scissors, pins, black and white thread.
-Sewing machine.
Let’s get started:
-When I said suede fabric, it can be any other soft fabric, because if we’re going to place it over the eyes, it needs to be soft—it shouldn’t be uncomfortable or cause irritation later on, otherwise sleep wouldn’t be restful at all.
-Since the fabric is black, I used white ink to mark the pattern so I could see where to cut later. There are two pieces for the black mask.
-The white fleece or felt fabric is used because it also needs to be soft and pliable, since it will go inside the two white pieces and act as a filling. You can use one or two pieces if you prefer it thicker, but I cut a single white piece.
-I pinned everything in place so that when I cut, the fabric wouldn’t shift, and so I wouldn’t cut right along the mark—you have to leave about one centimeter all around.
-For the strap that goes behind the head, cut a 40-cm rectangle, place it on the sewing machine, and turn it over using a stick or a pin.
-I measured out 25 cm of elastic and threaded it through the black rectangle of fabric, securing both ends with a pin, and then sewed it on the sewing machine.
-That's because with the other masks I've seen, you can see the elastic, and I don't really like that, so I wanted to make it this way with the fabric, and it turned out neater.
-The pieces go like this: the white one on the bottom, a black one on top of that, then place the elastic so the ends are on the sides, and finally cover it with the other black piece.
-Always pin it in place. Now, when sewing on the machine, if you follow the color markings, I started at the top, and before closing it up, you need to leave about 4 cm of space, since we’ll be turning the piece right side out through this opening later.
-Once we’ve sewn it, before turning it inside out, we make cuts in the excess fabric, but without cutting all the way to the seam. This is so the fabric doesn’t remain stiff.
-Once turned right side out, smooth it out with your hand so it’s nice and flat, then sew to close the opening you left open. Alternatively, you can sew all the way around to create a little border.
Making them for your business is a great idea—you can make them in various colors or just two, so they can be used on both sides. With sublimation printing, you can also customize them.
In fact, I showed it to a friend, and she told me she wants one.
