It’s already happened, but something happened that really moved me. First, though, I haven’t celebrated this day in a while because my father passed away many years ago—I do remember him, and I miss him. In my family, there’s only one father figure left, and that’s my brother, since my other brother’s only daughter passed away recently. So it wasn’t really a situation where I could say “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY” to him—the pain is still fresh, since it was only two months ago.

My children do have a father—they do—but it doesn’t really feel that way, because he hasn’t called them in years, doesn’t look for them, and doesn’t wish them a happy birthday. I haven’t instilled any hatred toward him in them; as they’ve grown up, they’ve come to realize how things really are.

And my children won’t be the only ones who have parents who are absent—that’s sad, but well, that’s just the way it is.

There are many of us mothers who are also fathers—even though this statement bothers a lot of people. But in my case, I’m not the one saying it; other people tell me so. It’s the same when they say there are fathers who are mothers, because they’ve also had to raise their children on their own, though these cases are fewer.

That’s why this past Father’s Day, when my youngest son, Vicent, woke up—and he’s not usually very expressive—after asking for my blessing, he said to me: HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, “because you’re a father too, Mom, to us,” that really touched me deep down; it flattered me and motivated me, but I would have liked him to say it to his dad. Still, things have to be earned: just as love is earned, so too are hatred and neglect.

I told him, “Thank you, son,” and yes, I am, because the things his father should have taught him—what they call “manly things”—I had to teach him myself; I had no other choice.

Although I know he still has a long way to go, at least he already knows the main things, the basics. But even if parents are separated, they shouldn’t forget their children—even if they start another family or have other children, they shouldn’t forget their other children: the first ones. But unfortunately, this happens all too often—the father forgets about his children.

They’re the ones who suffer the most, because when they’re little, you try not to say anything bad about their father to them, but as they grow older, they start to realize everything. I can no longer, as we say, hide the sun with a finger—especially now with social media. They know that their dad goes on vacation with his other family, that he celebrates his other children’s birthdays, that he’s told them lies, and they realize this on their own.

I thank God for the strength He has given me, for the wisdom, and for having what I need to raise my children: to help them with their studies, to support them in their needs, and to be there for them when they need me.

So I definitely deserve to celebrate FATHER’S DAY too, even if I don’t have that between my legs—but I do have my pants on right.
