•••
In the bower of her chamber,
The pensive Muse was seated,
When suddenly she heard afar off
A strange sound echoing through the night.
—Suddenly, there came a loud quaking
on the ground!
And with a wild cry and a prayer
She leaped from her couch to rise,
To go forth in haste amidst the winter storm;
But then there rose up a misty gloom
On all sides — on all the heavens;
And upon the earth below arose
An ominous silence that froze the air —
Like an unutterable groan or wail.
And as the sound grew louder with each stride of hers:
She soon recognized it — twas the sound of weeping!
And in a moment, from every hollow and recess,
Her heart seemed seized by a dread and fear.
Finally, at length, the dismal sounds were still,
Then there came a soft and melancholy light;
As if a gentle ray had broken out
Upon some distant glimmering plain.
So through the gloom she saw a pathway grow,
Leading onward into this mystery.
Gradually, she broadened out and led,
With gradual steps and slow advance;
That took its way through dark and narrow ways
Past groves of trees which seemed to pine;
Where oftentimes her footsteps broke
Upon the damp and crumbling stones.
Journeying further and further, and cautiously approaching this mystery with fear,
She soon found somewhat of a secret fountain springing up
Within the shadowy gloom around.
At sight thereof the terror passed away,
As if with an evil spell dispelled;
For it seemed as if some gentle hand
Had raised her soul above these narrow walls.
She gazed awhile, for while she gazed.
Hearing a sound like gentle murmurs mingled high
With sweet lowings, as though some hidden choir
Moved round within those dim arches near.
"Who comes there?" she cried, and the voice
Replied: "Come hither, Lady. I am she. Here I have been waiting, as you see."
And as the voice spoke, something soon emerged through the shadows.
Slowly, something like a phantom form, pale and fair;
Or some sad spirit of a vanished age
Draped in white robes, and clad in flowing hair appeared.
The phantom, appearing to look like a young adolescent girl, was so pure and angelic shone;
With her face and eyes so bright,
that they seemed wells of living fire to gaze Into, like eyes beaming into space;
And now, the spirit looked at the muse with such gladness
As seemed to say: ‘O thou who art here,
Thou whom my heart has waited on so long
That my whole life may not suffice to tell thee,
How happy I am to meet again!’
The muse, although in very truth bewildered,
Turned toward that image of divinity
And said: “Dear child, what meanest thou?
Why dost thou look so strangely upon me? Who am I to thee?
"Fear not" answered the apparition; "I am thine own. And thou shalt call me by the name that thou dost know.
The very one my dear mother called me thusly once before."
Then soon came another light, clearer than any yet,
straight from the muse's clear brows and her smiling lips and eyes.
It shone so bright, that the once former shade of fear on her countenance, quickly passed.
And from both their faces; a sudden chill seemed stealing through that chamber they stood.
There, they stood long while gazing into one other's eyes.
Then all at once, the shade turned faint and faded far
Down the long avenue; but the Muse was not at all afraid.
And with one step she stood closer to the girl.
And clasped her hands upon the girl's face with tender rapture,
While tears gathered softly in her eyes,
As she kissed the brow that she loved so dear
Almost as if she never would cease kissing the girl.
Joyfully and all the more sadly, the muse cried:
"Oh Sarah... is it really thine? Surely this must be a dream! Perhaps... perhaps I have fallen asleep on the table once again?"
But the apparition, with the warmest smile on her face, replied:
"Nay.. it is truly me mother."
And when she spoke those loving words once more,
A thrill ran through the muse's heart. The tears that fell
Filled the room with silver splendour. She stretched forth
Her arms to meet her darling; but alas, the dead
Were colder than the living can be chilled.
Then, a swarm of melancholy filled the muse's face to see her beloved react so sadly to her remark. Once more, the mother spoke
"Oh sweet child,... my heart breaks in two to see thy sorrow.
Wouldst thou not rather live thy days
Without a care upon the world at large?
Till death should end thy lonely lot!
Ahh...if only thou couldst known how dearly thine poor mother hath missed you! How she hath squandered everyday in pain, hoping you were the more happy in your afterlife!
And how heavily so, I loveth thee."
"As I love thee eternally?" asked the spirit abruptly. And with this, she pressed her beautiful daughter to her breast,
Lovingly caressing her golden hair,
And crying, "Oh sweet, most precious Sarah, I love thee more than there are stars in the entire universe!"
And as the two met in one another's arms
Their souls departed on one eternal kiss
The spirit, with kind words and soothing tones,
Remained with her till the dawning daybreak:
And at last the mother and the daughter slept
One in each other's arms in a deep embrace.

Para salir a toda prisa en medio de la tormenta de invierno;
Pero entonces se levantó una brumosa oscuridad
En todos los lados - en todos los cielos;
Entonces llegó una luz suave y melancólica;
Con pasos graduales y lento avance;
Pasando por arboledas que parecÃan pinos;
como si se disipara un hechizo maligno;
Yo soy ella. Aquà he estado esperando, como ves".
Lentamente, algo como una forma fantasma, pálida y hermosa;
El fantasma, que parecÃa una joven adolescente, era tan puro y angelical que brillaba;
que parecÃan pozos de fuego vivo en los que mirar, como ojos que se proyectan en el espacio;
"No... soy realmente yo, madre".
¿No preferirÃas vivir tus dÃas
