“That necklace you’ve got there. It’s so –”

“Eye-catching?”

“I was going to say tacky, but sure, eye-catching is good.”

Lisa stared down at the pendant around her neck. Her mother had bought it for her just last week and she was looking forward to showing it off around school.

“You’re just jealous.”

“Ha. Fuck off, dweeb.” Pushing past Lisa, the other girls left her alone stood outside her locker. Lisa fiddled with the chain, her face red and puffy from trying to hold back tears.

“Just two more years,” she muttered to herself.

“Until what?” Lisa’s best friend, Sara, emerged from behind her open locker. Lisa’s broken smile quivered uncontrollably as she closed its door. “Hey, what’s up?”

“N-nothing.” Lisa kept her hands at her side and her face forward, trying not to draw attention to her new necklace.

“Oh my god, that’s so cute!” Sara moved her hand towards Lisa’s neckline, and she reared her head back in response.

“You don’t have to lie to me, Sara.”
