Two rocks were placed unusually at the head of the staircase leading to what could only be described as the ball pit from hell. Sara and Nip approached carefully, placing a hand on a rock each.
“So, the instruction was to push these stones into the pit at the same time to get it to stop writhing and wriggling like that, right?” asked Sara.
“This must be what the scroll was referring to, yes.” Nip readied herself in front of her stone. “On my count, we’ll push our stones into the pit.”
Nip counted, and on three, both she and Sara pressed their rocks into the pit. The undulating surface creaked and shuddered to a stop, the mass of writhing earth and molten magma cooling and hardening to form a solid platform. Whatever magic was at play released a harsh hiss and produced an excessive amount of steam and fog that covered the room and staircase. Finally, it dissipated revealing the hardened path over the once perilous gorge.
“Looks like it worked, nice one. Now the sooner we get through this death maze, the sooner I can get home for my roast dinner with the kids.” Garrick approached the now solid and covered pit with little trepidation, stepping on its still cooling surface. Sara and Nip followed closely behind, and the group crossed in single file, before entering further into the mines.
