“Come on, Nip – your birthday ceremony is starting in two hours, we need you up and ready to go.” Nip’s mother, dressed in her nighty, woke up a tired and belligerent Nip from her slumber.
“Why the heck did I come here?” asked Nip, burying her face in her pillow.
“Because you love your mother and our wonderful traditions,” responded her mother, entirely earnest.
“Debatable.” Nip kicked off her duvet, groaning at the sun blasting through her window. “You know I came here for one thing and one thing only, the thing that we use as the hook for this antiquated overblown party.”
“Watch it, missy.” Nip’s mother folded clothes that had been left in a heap on the floor, piling them up on the chest of drawers.
“Is Dad making them now? Gnomish pancakes with omelette.” Her mouth watered as she wringed out the sleep from her eyes.
“He might be, he might be.” Her mother winked, stepping over to the bed and making it immediately as Nip stood up.
“Praise to Gearo Ganderous, His holiness and resplendent leader of the Gnomes,” said Nip, half sarcastically and half seriously as she pressed her feet into her well-worn slippers.
