It’s leche when you ask for it, not milk –
You sleep under a colcha, nice and warm.
Your mother teaches Spanish every day
To you to make an English-Spanish norm.

And with your colcha/blanket on your head,
Held tightly in its place under your chin,
And washing hands up to your elbows, we
Can see your Muslim daycare workers grin.

And I will make you Greek, and Roman, too,
And British, French, Italian, Russian, Czech,
And German through and through in all you read.
China, India, Japan – hear them beck!

How beautiful you’ll be with all of this
Brought into unity within the soul
Of you. Diversity will find its way
In you, if you are open, to a whole.
