ONU rejects statement proposed by Russia condemning attacks in Syria
The UN Security Council rejected on Saturday a draft resolution that had been presented by Russia and that demanded a condemnation of the attacks made by the United States, France and the United Kingdom against Syria, reports AFP.
The motion for a resolution received only three votes in favor, with eight other nations voting against and four opting to abstain.
The draft by Russia demanded that the Security Council condemn the attacks as "a violation of international law and the UN Charter."
At the opening of the meeting, the UN Secretary General, the Portuguese Antonio Guterres, had called on all parties to "act in accordance with the UN Charter".
However, at the meeting the delegations of the United States, France and the United Kingdom defended the missile attacks against several targets in Syrian territory.
These attacks were a response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government in the Duma region last Saturday.
US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Washington was "loaded and stuck" to hit Syria again if new chemical weapons were used.
Haley reiterated that Washington is "prepared to maintain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to put our determination to the test."
