Amazon has been ordered to pay about 250 million euros in back taxes to Luxembourg. This is due to the fact that the European Commission, believes that they have received illegal tax benefits. Amazon has answered, by saying that they have paid full taxes in regard to both the international tax law and those of Luxembourg. So why do big companies like these try to pay as little tax as possible. Is it because they know that the tax system itself is a con, and so do not want to be conned by this system. Or, maybe it’s because they are greedy and just want to make more profits. Some people will argue that we all need to pay our taxes, because it keeps countries and governments running smoothly. But how much taxes do we actually need to pay? It is difficult to say, because we don’t know where all the tax money goes, and it is almost impossible for any normal person to find this out. With so much red-tape in place, a person would have to make this their full time job. They would also have to be willing to travel up and down a country to find information relating to this, since they would be sent from one place to another by government officials, as this is how the system is designed. So the question is this. Should we all be more like Amazon and try to pay as little taxes as possible, or should we just do as our governments say and pay up without question? Is it wrong not to want to pay all the different types of taxes introduced by our governments, or is it better to try and find loopholes to pay none or as little as possible. Please let me know what you think in the comments.
