Students are given loans to fund their education, and for many, they pay the debt for the rest of their lives. We know how bad it is paying debt that keeps accumulating interest.
Would I accept all outstanding debt to be cleared off if it means everyone else, including me, pays more taxes to offset it? Would I accept this?
My honest answer is YES, I would accept it, but with conditions.
Let me explain.
I have seen what student loan debt does. I have a cousin in the US. She finished university since 2018, but till today she is still paying loan. She has a good job, but every month almost half of her salary goes to loan. She cannot buy house, she cannot even save properly. Her certificate gave her knowledge, but the debt gave her anxiety. That is not fair.
Education is not a luxury. It is a right. No one should be punished for life because they wanted to go to school.
So if government says, let us clear all student debts and everyone pays small extra tax to cover it, I will say yes. Why? Because tomorrow it could be me. It could be my brother. It could be my child. Today you pay tax for others, tomorrow others pay for you. That is how society should work.
But here is my worry.
In my country Nigeria, we don't even have student loans like that. We have ASUU strike, we have school fees that parents cannot pay, we have students hawking to pay fees. If they say they want to increase tax for everyone, the poor will suffer most. The rich will find way to avoid tax. So the system must be fair.
If the tax is progressive — meaning rich pays more, poor pays less or nothing — then I support it 100%.
Also, clearing debt alone is not enough. We need to fix why education is so expensive in the first place. Why should a 4-year course cost someone 20 years of debt? That is wicked.
So my final answer:
Yes, clear the debt. Let us all contribute through tax. But make it faiir, make it transpparent, and make educatiion cheapper so we don't returrn to the same hole agaain.
Educatioon should free people, not ensslave them with debtt.
