From a very young age I have been able to decide upon something and then just do it. I remember when I was about nine. I used to bite by finger nails until they would bleed. Then one day I was pulling on my clothes very quickly, and realised that my fingers were really hurting. That was the end of my biting finger nail habit.
Now the reason why I remember this story so well, is because it is one of my earliest memories of just giving something up just like that. Throughout my life I have continued to do this. If I believe that something is bad for me, I will give it up over a very short period of time.
I used to smoke in my teenage years, until I realised just how bad there were for me, not just long term, but day to day. My clothes, breath and room stank, to name just a few things. So again, that was the end of smoking for me.
This was the same story with fizzy drinks; I used to drink a lot of them, until I was told by my dentist not to. I have friends that have had tooth pains that reduce them to tears, but as soon as the tooth is removed, and the pain disappears, they return to fizzy drinks right away.
Now I believe that even small habits tend to lay the path to other bad habits. I used to always arrive late to places I did not want to attend. As this message of lateness being ok was sent and stored in my brain. I began to arrive late to other places and events as well, even places and events that I wanted to be at.
I believe that bad habits such as being late. When continued, send the message to the brain, that it is ok to do something that you know is not right, which in itself can lead to much larger problems.
In life, once you can clearly see that a bad habit is controlling your way of life, you need to give it up as soon as possible. If you have no medical condition, on why you cannot quit, then you have no excuse not to.
Become a stronger person and give up that bad habit today. If you are unhappy with a habit even if it is small, change it now. You are in control of your life; do not allow yourself to be controlled by external things, you are stronger than that.
So what bad habit do you want to give up?
• Smoking
• Offensive language
• Too much coffee
• Fingernail biting
• Too much sugar
Begin the journey today, and “never quit, quitting”.
