The darkness was brief. The moment she shut her eyes what she could see was a field with the most beautiful flowers. The lilies, roses, sunflowers and hibiscuses all lined up like a procession of colours. As she took her first breath in her reality all she could perceive was a beauty.
The clouds were as thick as cotton candy and the skies as blue as the sun would permit. As she took in her garden, she could feel the warmth of it. She took her first step on her bare feet and what she felt were the grasses as soft as a furry rug.
She took in this scene as she began to wander in her Elysium. The birds chirped, sang and danced as they flew by and the butterflies glided past her as they normally would. The bees performed their tasks of pollination calmly while she continued to wander.
She never questioned the presence of such a scene or the feeling it gave her. She deserved that peace, she told herself repeatedly. She walked, hopped, ran and crawled. Taking in as much of this peace as she could. Installing and savouring as much of this beauty. So she could remember the taste even on her tongue.
"Are you asleep, Hailey?" She heard those words like a whisper. She drowned them out for as long as she could but there was only so much fight she had within her as the pressure increased.
"Hailey! Hailey!! HAILEY!!!"
Her Elysium was completely gone. The roses began to smell like moist wood. Her fluffy grass was nothing but the hardened wood of her floors and the itchy mat where she lay her head looking up to what was once her gotten candy clouds but was now nothing but the remains of what once used to be a ceiling.
Her eyes wandered until they came in contact with the voice that brought her back to her reality. She saw the soft eyes of her mother looking into hers with a smile on her lips.
"Hey, mom", she finally said and then proceeded to have the conversation they had every night as the candles lit their small home during dinner.
The world she created when she was lost in her mind was amazing but even that couldn't compete with the way she felt when she spoke at length about her tiring day on the farm with her loving mother.
