I am not very fond of the songs of the plains, however I have sung this song countless times. Firstly because of the beauty of its melody and secondly because the lyrics contain a contradiction that is very funny, despite being a sad story. But it is at the same time talking about a "friendship" of certain individuals, which leaves much to be desired ...
I'm going to include the lyrics this time, so you know what I mean.
This is another of the great successes of one of the most beloved singer-songwriters of all time in Venezuela, Simón Díaz.
With this I am participating in the SGL-Solidarity initiative, week 4.
Lyrics / Letra
Mercedes se está bañando
A las orillas del río
Mis ojos la están mirando
Pero es de un amigo mío
Yo no quisiera mirarla,
Pero no tengo la culpa
Se parece a una esmeralda
Con flores de "chupa chupa",
Que yo le avise a mi amigo
Muy difícil me resulta
Allá hay un caimán ceba'o
Que mide más de una cuadra
Con mas cachos que un venado
Y más dientes que veinte babas
Ella inocente de todo
Se baña sin percatarse
Que cuando llegue al recodo
El caimán puede acercarse
Y yo solo en la barranca
Y Mercedes sin fijarse
Me voy corriendo a su casa
Pa' que mi amigo lo sepa,
Le echaré una cantaleta
Y le digo lo que pasa
Que hay un inmenso peligro,
Que corre allí su mujer
Que se lo dice un amigo
Que algo tenemos que hacer
Que vaya pronto a salvarla
¡Y de ñapa voy con él!
Cuando llegamos al pozo,
La mujer no se veía,
El caimán patas pa' arriba
Dormía de lo más sabroso
Le di el pésame en el acto
Y abrazándolo le digo
Que eso pasa a cada rato
Que son cosas del destino
Y que de aquí en adelante
Que cuente con un amigo
Mercedes is swimming
In the riverbank
My eyes are watching her
But she belongs to a friend of mine
I would rather not look at her,
But I am not to blame,
She looks like an emerald
With chupa chupa flowers.
Warning my friend
That would be very hard for me to do
There is a fierce alligator
Longer than a block
It has more horns than an stag
And more teeth than 20 white caimans
She, oblivious about everything
Keeps bathing without realizing
That when she gets to the bend
The alligator can get close to her
And I'm alone in the ravine
And Mercedes doesn't look at it
I run back to her home
So that my friend will know
I will tell him a story
And tell him what's happening
That there is a great danger
That her woman is in
That it's a friend who is telling him this
That we have to do something
That he should go save her soon
And as a "bonus" I will go with him
When we got to the pond
The woman wasn't in sight
The alligator was upside down
Sleeping like a baby
I immediately offered him my condolences
And, hugging him, I say:
This happens all the time,
It's just the way it is,
And that from now on
He can count on a friend.
