The classical liberal movement was about finding the proper role for government. The US Founders created (aka the Classical Liberals) created a Constitutionally limited federal government which included a Bill of Rights.

So they were imagining a tiered form of government with different things happening at the local, county, state and federal governments.

They were not driven by a hatred or a love of government. They simply wanted a properly limited government.

I like the tiered government structure. For example, I think that the Federal government should control immigration. Local and State governments should serve all residents.

I think local governments should deal with issues like public education.

People liked the Constitutionally limited government and it polled well.

Progressivism and Conservatism are partisan ideologies. Politicians on the left and right seek to gain power by conflict. They have an institutionalized conflict where progressives mindlessly attack the social order and conservatives mindlessly defend select institutions.

I find both of these partisan ideologies to be mindless.
