Broken Snow ShovelI decided to participate in #LPUD this month--March 2015. I had 437 LEO at the start of the month. The power up will bring me to 587 LEO. My current LEO upvote is worth 0.016 LEO. Half the upvote goes to the author and the other half to the curator. I get 0.008 LEO each time I vote.

I am hoping that the power up will raise my upvote value to 0.02 LEO. That means that I my opinion would be worth two LEO cents.

I know that this is just my two LEO cents worth ... but I think that this is a big deal from a metaphorical point of view.

I like the LEO coin. LEO has the best distributed richlist on HIVE. The power up will place me on page 16 on the LEO Richlist. The richlist shows 50 lines per page. After the power up, I should be near postion 787 on the list.

As I understand, LEO Finance favors conversations centered on cryptocurrency. I tend to favor phislophical musings. So, LEO has not been the primary focus of my activities.

My Thoughts on LPUD

Although I am participating in #LPUD, I am not a big fan of the Power Up Day concept as power up day creates a false economy. If you've followed the history of LPUD you will see that it creates waves in the price of LEO.

What I usually do is to sell my LEO earnings in the days before LPUD ... when the price is rising. I stake my LEO in the weeks after LPUD ... when the price is falling.

The Recent Dip in HIVE and LEO

Several moons ago the witnesses raised the interest rate on HBD to 20%. HBD is currently the premiere focus of the Hive-o-Sphere.

Since the witnesses rose the interest rate of HBD to 20%, I no longer recommend that people invest in LEO POWER or HIVE POWER. One should invest every spare penny in HBD savings.

For the last several months I've been powering down 10 HIVE a week and transferring the funds to HBD Savings.

Anyway, I was sad to see that the price of HIVE had fallen under $0.4. I didn't want to sell my HIVE for HBD.

As I whim, I decided to use my powered down HIVE for LPUD.

For this last year, the smart move has been to dump the coins from Hive Engine and to transfer the funds to HIVE.

This may change.

When I started writing this post, Ausbit Bank showed that the market cap of HBD was around $12.4 M and that that it had grown to over 7% of the market cap of HIVE.

The system invokes a haircut when HBD reaches 30% of HIVE.

The 20% interest rate on HBD puts a huge downward pressure on the price of HIVE and the alt-coins.

As I said. Buying and powering up LEO is a risky deal. While the 20% interest on HBD is a no-brainer.

The only problem with HBD savings is the potential hair cut. With the market value of HBD rising at a rate higher than HIVE, the potential hair cut looms large.

It seems to me that the witnesses will be faced with the decision of either raising the haircut rate or lower the interest rate.

The high interest rate puts a huge downward pressure on HIVE and the alt coins.

I repeat, it is better to put your HIVE funds in HBD than in any of the coins.

It is stupid to invest in HIVE when the witnesses are using HIVE to secure a multimillion dollar loan at 20% interest.

Anyway, since the market value of HBD was over 7% of HIVE. I figure that the witnesses are likely to be faced with the decision of raising the hair cut rate or lowering the interest rate some time this year.

If the witnesses lowered the interest rate on HBD, we might see a change in the dynamics of the Hive-O-Sphere and the investments on Hive Engine might become a good deal again ... and we could see the price of LEO and the other coins rise.

While, in general, HBD is a better investment than LEO. The price of LEO may have fallen to the point where LEO is the better deal.

Of course, what I said was wishful thinking.

The reason that I decided to participate in LPUD is because I decided that, for the first time since the witnesses raised the interest rate on HBD, LEO might be a better investment than HBD.

Using Deisel Pools to Buy LEO

Buying funds on Hive Engine is tricky. So, I decided to take a short cut and use the Diesel Pools on TribalDex

The diesel pool is an investment vehicle designed to facilitate swaps between coins. In my case, I wanted to swap my SWAP.HIVE for LEO. There are pools for other coin pairs.

The pools work as follows. The diesel pool asks investors to deposit equal amounts of coins in a pair. The user then receives shares in the pool.

The system pays interest and gives rewards to people who invest in the pools.

The pool will use the funds in the pool to facilitate transactions. When a transaction takes place, the pool adjusts the ratio of the two coins for the people who own shares in the pool.

Swap pools often have trading bots which execute trades in reaction to the swaps.

The swap price usually takes place between the BID and ASK price on Hive-Engine.

The swaps allow users to make medium size transactions without the drama associated with trades on HE.

I understand that larger transactions can experience slippage.

NOTE, if you are using swaps, you should check out the trading action on Hive Engine before engaging in the swap. You should also check out the amount of funds in the pool. A large transaction on a pool might experience some costly slippage.

Many of the coins on Hive Engine have low trading volume and huge gaps between BID and ASK.

If you really need to make a trade. The swap is a better option.

If you have time; it is usually better just to make low ball trades on HE.

Anyway, my last HIVE power down took place on March 9.

I had just over 10 HIVE. I sold half of it. I then made a deposit of 5.016 SWAP.HIVE and 42.491 LEO into the diesel pool.

Just prior to to writing this post. I liquidated my diesel holdings. The price of LEO increased relative to HIVE during this period. When I pulled the funds I received 5.048 SWAP.HIVE and 42.257 LEO. The system says I earned a $0.002 fee for the period my money was in the pool.

Since I invested at a time when there was upward pressure on the price of LEO relative to HIVE, I lost a bit of money in the transaction.

The pools look like a decent avenue for passive income.

I have to repeat. Currently, the 20% interest on HBD outshines all other investments on HIVE. Since HBD puts a downward pressure on other investments. It is the best way to invest on HIVE.

Conclusion: The deisel pools are great for medium size transactions. They also are a good way to earn passive income on the platform.

Were the witnesses to drop the interest on HBD, I think they might be a good choice for people looking for passive income.

The swaps tend to be a better choice for large investments on HIVE. I've done better with series of small transactions on HE.

Since LPUD puts an artificial upward pressure on LEO in the build up to the event, it is not a good investment for LPUD.

I think the best way to do LPUD would be to buy LEO in the weeks after LPUD. I guess one could use the funds for daytrading.

It was fun participating in LPUD. Here is my power up transaction. I now have 587 LEO. I doubt I will ever power down.

I have dreams of some day retiring on interest from my LEO account.

I should be getting a LEO penny for each upvote. I guess that means that I am living the dream.

My goal back in 2021 was to accumulate 1000 LEO. Of course I stopped investing in Hive Engine after the witnesses raised the interest on HBD to 20%.

The Picture

As for the pictures. I broke my snow shovel while accumulating a pile of snow by the driveway last month.

I snipped off the broken part of snow shovel. I guess that broken shovels are just part of the business costs in the show shoveling industry.

As I recall, snow shovels cost around $20. So the shovel costs more than my LPUD investment.

The snow pile has been gradually liquidating. I suspect that nature will completely liquidate the pile by Spring.

Even though the snow pile is larger and accumulates at a rate faster than the shovel, I do not believe that snow piles are a good long term investment.
