| Lichens are symbiotic organisms, as far as I can remember from a biology class (I always had a grade of 5 in biology when it was the highest score). Inside the fungus, which produces water and nutrients, lives a colony of blue-green algae that are capable of photosynthesis. Because of this, lichens can survive where other plants die. When there is no moisture, the lichens dry up, but do not die, and wait for more favorable conditions. And when there is enough moisture, they immediately acquire bright and saturated colors, as in the photo. Such conditions for lichens occur at the end of winter, when the frosts recede and the snow melts, then there is a lot of moisture, which is so necessary for these symbiotes. |
