A little over two weeks ago, I was forced to take a break from Hive because I had bigger responsibilities and expectations arrive at my doorstep. I remembered my commitment to show up consistently onchain, but somehow, in the middle of it all, I figured writing actively on Hive would not be feasible until I'd gained a balance.
Usually, because of my determination to see things through, I may have struggled with this decision. I probably would have decided to fit things tightly into my schedule just to achieve my aim of consistency, but now things are a lot different. I now see life from a new lens, and I know for a fact that I can simply make decisions that are only favorable to my well-being and not regret a thing about it.
I mean, it’s a beautiful thing to be consistent with the things that bring us total joy, or for the love of the game, but generally, when we have other important things calling, it’s pertinent that we take a step back and prioritize what needs to be prioritized. And if you’re somebody like me who doesn’t just do things to earn rewards but for personal fulfillment and self-expression, you might want to tow this path too.
You’ll have to understand that seasons come and go, and some require you to focus more on profitable work than other less rewarding engagements. This may also include your hobbies. It doesn’t mean that you’ll leave the things you love forever or even a place like Hive that earns you rewards for your time. It simply means that you have the power to pause, rethink and choose the path that is most important at that point rather than juggling everything all at once.
If you break down today with all your responsibilities, family, corporate work or business, whilst still beating yourself up to show up on Hive every day, complete reading a whole book or taking that little social media gig that sucks away your time, barely anyone will mourn your loss forever. Life will go on, and that’s enough reason to also prioritize YOU FOR YOU.
Since I took a break from Hive and dropped a few other tasks that could wait, I can say I’ve had better sleep and a little more time to myself. It’s been helpful that I also paused my active social media accounts for a while, and when I returned, I began to use it passively. All of these have contributed to giving me a saner mind anda healthier body.
Yes, I still do the work required of me every single day, but I make sure I’m not taking more than I can carry or enough to break me. That’s because there’s no money or commitment to a thing that’s worth my mental health.
This isn’t to say ditch your additional sources of income or leave your hobbies to die away. It’s saying prioritize yourself while trying to pay the bills. Work smarter, not necessarily harder. Expend your energy into the things that bring you more value, even if it means leaving active social media and taking a professional course or internship for 3-6 months. Ensure that you’re observant of your bodily needs while doing the bulk of your work too because if you’re not paying attention to your body, the ripple effect will be loud enough to keep your roof open for a long time.
So if you’re someone who carries too many responsibilities without rest simply because you think you’re losing out on some money or you devote too much time to activities that can wait, then you need to take a chill pill. I’ll even add that if you’re one who’s too involved in social media that you don’t get to enjoy life away from the noise, you might need to redirect your priorities.
Most importantly, always remember to prioritize your health. You will thank yourself in years to come.
