Today, after exercising with my partner, we went to the bus stop to wait. Across from me was a policewoman with what appeared to be her son, who were also waiting for the same bus line as us. Sadly, a poor pigeon was hit by a car in the street. The first impact injured it, and unfortunately for me, I looked into its eyes and felt its pain for a moment. Seconds later, another car hit it, ending its suffering.
I believe, and believed at the time, that this was the best thing to do, to end her suffering. Unfortunately, we know that in these situations, a pigeon isn't usually taken to a vet for free, and without proper care, she ends up living a very miserable life, and, with the best of luck, her suffering is finally put to rest, as in this case. What also disturbed me was how the police reacted, presumably out of concern for the child who was with her.
While hypocrisy is commonplace, and we see how certain things perhaps outrage us more than others, as the philosopher Nietzsche said: "If you kill a cockroach, you are a hero. If you kill a beautiful butterfly, you are evil. Morality has aesthetic criteria." With this I mean, the policewoman carries a weapon, with which she is "qualified" to kill, subdue, wound, or injure a human being who "threatens the norm." But then why do we resign ourselves to selective suffering, failing to see the root of the problem and always condemning, for example, someone who steals to eat, someone wounded by a gunshot, or a woman who died, for instance, in the United States at the hands of a police officer who shot her twice before fleeing...
Obviously, I'm not saying that only this particular police force I'm referring to would do the same as these deplorable people killing someone for evading an ICE checkpoint. While people like this are always full of hatred (towards others), they also project that hatred onto their own people. I can't understand the hypocrisy... the moral hypocrisy with which people operate in the world, killing a cockroach out of "fear" or "disgust," but letting a beautiful butterfly in. Taking advantage of the situation, I recommend this book by this philosopher to conclude this post... Best regards.
