Hello everyone! Today I'm going to share about my recent durian hunt. The durian fruits are in season now. We can see them being sold here and there especially when we are nearing the suburb regions. Durian is the king of fruits and the king of durian is the musang king variety.
My family and I were going to buy some to eat but my aunty bought them when we visited her the previous week. We merely shared to her that we wanted to eat some, and she just rushed out suddenly and told us that she will be back with the durians. Within 20 minutes, she was back with a bunch of yummy musang king and the blackthorn durian. They were so yummy, especially the musang king.
The following week, we went on a hunt for durians again but this time just for regular village type called durian kampung. We did notice a stall the previous week so this time we didn't miss the stop. This is the durian stall. We were going to Batang Kali and this stall was at the side of the road as the road leading there goes near village areas. That's where the durian orchards are usually.
That's my mother looking at the fruits. I was just playing photographer before joining my family to do the same.
This is the pricing board for the durian kampung type which is the village durian. 1 kg of them cost RM 10 while 10 kgs of the same type of durians cost RM 60. So we will be able to save RM 10 if we buy them in bulk. They are actually tasty as long as they are fresh. If it has been too long since they have been plucked, the durians start accumulating gas and they may not feel good to be eaten. I have tried them and they caused me to have an uncomfortable tummy.
These are another type of durians. Even the village type have subtypes. I am not very well versed in them but I think that the sellers classify them based on how big they are and how fresh too. Some durians can contain worms too and somehow the sellers know how to identify them even without opening the fruit. They were also selling a famous vegetable called petai, which are hung on the sides. In English it's called stinky beans and it does live up to it's name. I can't even stand the smell no matter how well it is cooked but many people love it.
These durians were grouped into baskets and we need to buy the entire basket if we want them. They looked a little small though compared to regular size. The cost is very cheap as it is in bulk and I think it's great if we are having a durian party with many people. Otherwise it will be much in my opinion. While durian is yummy, we cannot overeat it due to health concerns and have to limit the consumption.
Here's a closer look of some of the other durians.
The seller opened up every durian and took the fruits out for us. This is when we can check whether there are any worms in the fruit. If there are any, the seller will just discard them and pick up a new durian before repeating the process. They would just close the fruit up later and we can reopen them at home. However some offer containers so we can pack the fruits in.
It's best to bring along our own container so we don't have to carry the heavy and thorny durian skin home. They can be alot too depending on how many we are buying. That way we don't have to go out again to get rid of the trash the same day. By the way, the sellers usually do some sanding on the skin to reduce the thorns. The unsanded skin will be even more sharper and can cut our skin if we aren't careful.
So I thought we were done buying but my father took a U-turn and went back to the stall because he saw these. They were priced even cheaper like RM 2 per fruit. However the seller won't open them up for us so we can't check the condition of the fruits. He bought a few of them to try.
This is a forest reserve I saw on the way home. This road leading to Batang Kali also has some waterfalls and I have seen people queueing at the side of the road to collect the water on smaller looking falls. It's not even a fall actually, that part is just some water dripping but people come with many large containers to collect the water. I wonder if it has healing properties or has something special other than being natural water.
We reached home and my father opened up the last group of durians that he bought. They all seemed to be alright except one which had a little worm. Then we had a little durian feast. They were so creamy and sweet unlike their tough exterior shells.
I just want to add a few words of caution to people trying durian. Please don't consume too many of them at once. Drink a lot of water and avoid gas drinks. People have literally died due to that. I guess I almost got to my limit of consumption as after two days, I got sore throat and it turned into flu. Durian is a heaty fruit so it was expected. After I felt better, I ate again and guess what, I had a round two of the symptoms. It was frustrating but at least round two wasn't as bad as earlier.
Thank you for dropping by and I wish everyone a great day ahead. Enjoy the durian season to those who love them!
